Looking for advice from other working parents who have elementary or middle school aged kids. For their math, are you enrolling them in these extra classes? If yes, what is the preferred choice between kumon and Russian School of Mathematics? I somehow feel the repetitive rote approach of kumon will eventually lose my child’s interest in maths. But RSM is not easy and probably for advanced kids? My 5th grader is falling behind in math these days and I am little worried about it. Hence considering these enrichment options. Already tried Mathnasium but I was not happy with her progress there
RSM all day all night. RSM teaches kids rigorous math, often a lot more than what’s taught in schools. This will not only prepare your kid for school mathematics, but also for future standardized tests. RSM might be significantly more expensive, but it’s definitely worth it. Whoever recommends Kumon imo is only doing it for the price. It’s inferior in both the material it teaches and the way it’s done.
Good to know, thank you--been considering RSM for my kids
Thank you!
I was in Kumon growing up, it helped me enormously. Thanks to my Indian parents!
My kids have been in RSM since 1st grade. If you’re kid is falling behind in 5th grade math, you might have to level down for RSM. My 5th grader is learning 8th grade concepts. Kumon is def. rote memorization. Might be good at calculating, but RSM def. goes deeper, makes you think. My kids hate it, but have confidence in being ahead at school.
That’s awesome for your kids! We enrolled our kid to RSM a month back. She is liking it so far
Asking curiously as a parent of a 4 year old.. what’s the reason to send to RSM? Is it to practice the concepts taught at school again? What percentage of kids go to RSM or kumon?
4 seems too young for rsm. Rsm teaches you how to think out of the box and algebraic functions from a young age.
RSM location and class schedule never worked for my kids, so no experience there. Kumon is a good supplement for school math, it's repetitive nature with occasional return to previously studied blocks really helped reinforce math knowledge.
