I think I can eventually make it to L8 if I slog it out. But I'm getting a little bored with software eng. Should I go for an MBA with the intention of switching to PE/VC/strategy consulting? I'm not sure I'd even be good at those things. In my eng role, I can design and strategize well, but I'm lacking in daily execution. Would I be a good fit for these post-mba jobs? Will they be more interesting? Would I at least make more money with an MBA? 29 yo 5 yoe TC:480k #tech #finance #consulting

PhD maybe?
But only 29 yo! Op is winner
I don’t think you need mba to do most of those things. If I was you I’d start doing more 20% projects... there’s a few with startups on grow. Or something with GV or capitalG. Once you get a little taste of what that’s like, I’d transition 100% into those roles and then into VC firms outside google. The fact you can do all of what you said in different PAs or bets is the best thing about Google.
Oh god no!!!!!!! You would make not more than $180k (average is much lower) after you graduate MBA..so you would give up 960k in salary + pay 150k in tuition to get a job that pays 180k..Iemme ask my 5th grader if it is a good idea..well he says no, fuck no!
I’d say go for it. At worst you come back at L6, but at this age it could be your last chance to get a decent MBA.
It’s not worth it. You will get bored of that too eventually.
I'm interested in your story. Would you mind share with us?
I suggest going part time for the MBA and work on becoming an Engineering Manager or transition into a senior strategy role at Google. Find an exec at Google to mentor you. People that go MBA to consulting route leave and go to strategy roles at Google. You’re already there. As a engineer I doubt you’ll be able to transition to PE. Other thought is to take some MBA classes or cert-credit at Stanford or Kellogg in a specialization that interests you.
Hey man. Dm me. Tldr this is a dumb move but happy to GVC over it
I’m in a similar boat. L7, MS from Stanford, wondering what it takes to get into the PE space
You're almost definitely not going to break into Private Equity unless you have a track record of working in finance. Growth Equity or VC could be doable That being said you probably don't want to work in PE anyways, the vast majority of PE is buying stakes in boring legacy company where you can financially engineer their balance sheets
You would probably make way more money just changing jobs instead of wasting years studying and then starting afresh. That is unless you hate your current role. A few hundred thousand is not worth doing something you don't want to do.
Every job gets boring once you start getting paid too much for it
