Enjoy my current team/trajectory @ goog. There exists a path to L5 (currently L4) However, I got a strong offer from meta. I fear WLB and pressure to excel. I don’t know what to do, any advice appreciated. I am young and want to be at a place I can learn and grow my knowledge. Although the high meta TC growth is tempting. Yoe: 2 ( recent grad, bachelors) NOTE: meta year 1 tc with signon is ~410k Thanks
I don’t get it. If you’re so happy at google, why did you interview? IMO good teams (with growth) with good managers and teammates are hard to come by. I would optimize for quick L5 promo, then jump ship (or try for retention offers)
Retention offers are hard to come by as L4. I interviewed for E4/E5
I’m saying try for retention once you’re L5
I don’t think the pay bump is worth it, esp with clear path to L5 on your team. I would reinterview again in 2-3 years for an L5 offer.
Thanks. The team I would be joining is growing and E5 promo is attainable within similar time frame in my view.
They’ll get to E5 in 2-3 yrs at Meta anyway. You have a little over 3 yrs to get promoted from E4 to E5 or you get PIP’d.
You will reach e5 quickly at meta than at G
True on average, not necessarily true on an individual basis, especially since OP is already established in their team and has momentum. I know plenty of people getting pretty fast promo to L6+ at google.
I am pretty sure with 2 yoe, it will take at least 2-3 more years to reach l5 @ google. While meta can be as quick as 1 year
can dm me if u have qs about meta aiml infra
Dmed
Then why did you interview?
Because you have leverage when negotiating.
Negotiating what at google? You said yourself you are not planning to ask for retention since very unlucky to happen for L4. I mean good for you if you want to join meta and earn more money, but I don’t get the logic.
The TC at Meta includes a signing bonus. Is that a fair comparison?
I'm starting to question life right here. Congrats on your offers!
i wouldn’t do it
Why?
levels of stress and backstabbing here. doesn’t seem sustainable in the long term. company outlook feels abysmal. i would need more comp to make those things worth it.

Google laid off 200+ in core team
What team on Meta? Chances are you will learn more at Google. The good teams at Meta are few and far between, but those teams are very good
Specialized ML/AI infra team.
hmm. That area is a clown show in general, but your particular team might be good. I would stay at Google. If you love your team and area you work on, that is the most important thing.
