I was a SDE1 in Alexa. Currently on F1 visa. Got laid off. Visa expiring in 6 months. Was hoping my H1B somehow gets picked up in 2023 since that is my last chance. But Amazon is not putting my application in 2023 lottery. What are my options? Edit: I am on STEM OPT Extension. I still have 4 months (unemployment days) to find a job. STEM OPT Extension expires in May. Real issue is about H1B. My H1B is not applied, and given that this is my last chance on H1B, after talking to recruiters, they are looking for people with more than 1 year of valid Visa.
I would highly recommend for finding different options - * Consider moving to India. Find companies that have presence in USA and work with company to file for H1B. It's a long shot but completely worth it. * Start considering Canada as an option too.
What about your OPT?
OPT is expiring in 6 months.
Move to Canada?
Through job offer right… but internal teams in Canada are not hiring as much.
Start packing your bags. Getting a company to sponsor your H1b will be extremely hard in this work environment. Your American dream is up buddy!
Have some empathy. OP might still have student loans pending.
Consider finding a company which have offices in Canada…move to Canada as internal transfer and ask employer to apply for H1B and once it’s picked transfer to US after it picks up. Few folks I know of at Google and Amazon did this. Some of them enrolled in 2nd masters and got day1 OPT/CPT
Are you on STEM OPT? In that case you have the following options: 1) get a job in companies that will put you up for H1b. Problem is, if it doesn’t get picked you are in trouble 2) Try for O-1 or L-1 visa. It’s easier when you ate working in a company for a few years 3) Talk to an immigration lawyer for your chances with NIW (national interest waiver). For nationals who are not from India, may file for I-485 after their I-140 is approved. Then they can work with EAD card when it is available. Regardless of what you do next, it maybe beneficial to talk to an immigration lawyer.
I think you only have 90 days of unemployment on opt and not 6 months till visa expires. Do check the rules.
There’s always marriage to citizen.
That would have been fun had I not been married. 😂
Go back to India, work for a company that has US presence, come back after a year on L1A visa and get Greencard in 15 to 18 months.
6 months is a long time my friend , I hope you find something quickly
6 months is not the challenge... Applying for a H1 and have it picked is
