1 vs 5 Million - no lifestyle change
I got laid off at the beginning of the year, just signed a new job offer. It took roughly 2 months of active looking but I’ve technically been applying since the end of March for unemployment. It was easier since I’m senior, it’s much harder if you’re looking for entry level or much higher levels. The market has picked up a lot in the last two months. Most people I know at the senior level found an acceptable new job with 2 months of active interviews though with less comp. Everyone I know is a US citizen so I can’t speak for those who need sponsorship. Good luck everyone there are still jobs out there. Prev 350-400k depending on stock price (but only 1 year from cliff) Now 275k Both fully remote #severance #layoff
That's great news, OP. It is a solid offer in this market, especially since it's 100% remote.
Did you find that it took longer because there are fewer positions available, or because they are being more selective, or because there are more applicants, etc?
There are definitely fewer roles open and everyone is hiring for business critical only. I lost 4 jobs in 24 hours (1 recruiter got laid off, 2 jobs were filled, 1 role became no longer remote). When I got the offer I had very little negotiating power and had 2-3 days to make a decision even though I had a bunch of interviews lined up. On the other hand I prepped more so it was my most successful set of interviews ever. After the first 6-8 technical interviews I started passing the technical screen at every company. I took interviews with companies that required in person first so by the time I started performing well I was only interviewing with remote companies. I only started interviewing in June though I talked to recruiters a bit before that.
Can you share what resources you found most useful/updated w.r.t. interview questions (e.g. Leetcode + System Design)? Much thanks 🙏.
Cobgrats!
Congrats!
Amazing.
Impressive, very nice, let's see Paul Allen's job offers
Congrats op! If anyone else on this thread is still looking and would like a TikTok/Bytedance referral, just DM me
I heard TikTok only hires from elite colleges? They will interview anyone interesting to milk them for real world system design knowledge, but won't actually give an offer of you're not an elite. How true is this?
I got hired and I didn’t go to an elite college
Awesome! YOE?

Congratulations! Very encouraging! How were the interviews? How much time did it take end to end? Also i hope someone can weigh in on how the market is like for H1B holders (non-eng, business roles).
I’ve been applying for 3 jobs a week since end of March for unemployment. I started actively interviewing in June. Most companies I applied to directly never responded, a couple of recruiters from the same teams reached out to me via LinkedIn 2 months later so it might have been through my applications. Most of my interviews are via referrals or recruiter reach outs. In the beginning I said yes to every recruiter who reached out since I needed interview practice. I always asked if the role is remote but I also said I’m fine with it if there is an office requirement. It worked really well since most of the companies I failed in the beginning were jobs I couldn’t take since they had an office requirement. Interestingly when I applied directly, I was more likely to hear back from more prestigious companies than less prestigious ones. Recruiters do a lot more screening now so you need to talk to the recruiter and maybe the HM before they start interviewing you.
I appreciate your insights - thank you! Would you have a hypothesis for why you think applying directly actually is more effective than through referrals?
