Hey folks, I got laid off back in February. 50% of my job applications are getting rejected (I get 2-3 rejection emails every morning), and the other 50% are ghosted. I've gotten a handful of interviews with Netflix, Amazon and some small private start-ups, but I'm not getting any offers. I have 9+ years of experience, both as an individual contributor (front-end engineer) as well as managerial (direct reports and experience managing contractors and agencies). My specialty is UI and UX, I have a decent portfolio of products and apps that I both designed and coded individually and as part of teams. I have an active GitHub account with code samples. I don't know if it's the economy, or if something is wrong with me. I cycle between having confidence that I'll ride things out with my savings vs. panicking not knowing what I'll do if I never get hired again (and the longer the job gap on my resume, the worse it looks). A ton of positions I keep applying for and feel that I'm qualified for (and getting rejected from) keep getting reposted over and over again, every few weeks. Does anyone know what the hell it'll take for me to get hired? Can anyone offer a referral? I'm looking at "UI Design Manager" or "UX Manager" or "Product Design Manager, Growth" or similar roles. Thanks in advance for any advice! #design #interviews #ui/ux #ux #unemployed #referrals #referralexchange
Try not to take it personally (easy to say, hard to do). Right now, the economy sucks so itās an employerās market; youāre likely going up against managers with years more experience. It will work out but it doesnāt hurt to take a few of the job postings, your portfolio and resume to a job coach for independent feedback.
Wanna move to Michigan? I got a job for you if you do (and you can pass my interview)
Getting manager role is harder than IC.
Try IC position at good or decent company
Was your last employer HPE?
Good luck OP, check https://boooom.co/ for managerial roles. For example, I saw Webflow is looking for a PD manager. If you want I can review your portfolio and give you pointers, Iām interviewing 6-7 senior designers every week lately so I might have good insights for you.
Manager roles are hard to come by. Many companies donāt need more managers with ICs getting laid off. Some managers are also getting laid off, flooding the market with top talent so firms have their pick. It can also be more challenging for people who started in one role (Eng) and moved to Design. DM me if you want portfolio feedback.
