TLDR - Got laid off in January. Found a job in April. New company lied about being e-verified and now have a month to find a new job before OPT expires. BS, MS for top 50 ranked US university and 1 YOE at NetApp I am in a very tough and urgent situation. I was a Software Engineer at NetApp and was impacted by the layoffs . I am on an F-1 OPT visa. I applied to over 1000+ companies and applications. I was able to secure one job at a company where I started recently (3 weeks ago). It was a huge pay cut but I needed to take this option as I had very little time left to extend my OPT, and I was led to believe that they were E-verified(a requirement for the STEM OPT extension) and so I made the move and relocated to the job location. Three weeks into the orientation and onboarding process, I was informed that they are not E-verified. Now I am in a very tough position where I have one month left to find a job at a company that is E-verified. I am open to all software engineering(full-stack, backend, frontend), data science, and data analytics roles. I am in urgent need of options, advice as well as referrals. If you are hiring or if you know anyone who is, please reach out or comment so I can reach out to you. You need to go back, looks like.
What’s with the poeple from Yahoo and their zero empathy?
OP came here legally; went through the process and paperwork and paid all the monies. I've gotten visas overseas, gone through the process, got my chest x-rays and fingerprints and everything and worked a few years and went home (even a few months before my visa was up). This isn't an illegal who crossed in from Mexico. This is someone who has followed the rules and got the right paperwork and was mislead by a potential employer. So just shut the fuck up man.
Consulting seems extremely sketchy. Some of them said they won’t start processing immediately and others are asking about changing birth dates and adding 8 YOE.
They can get Everified in a few weeks. You can push for that. A very simple process actually
They said that if they convert to E-verify, they would have to do it for all new employees. Not just for me. So they’re saying they won’t do it. I’m pushing for it but seems unlikely
Plus I’m not even sure if an employer can be just e-verified for one employee
If you have something in writing proving there was misrepresentation, you might be able to talk to an immigration lawyer. At the very least you might be able to sue them and live comfortably for a bit :/ It's a shitty situation and I don't mean to diminish that, but it's the best idea I have short of finding the rare company these days that can move that fast and has their visa game on point.
I have email proof asking for E-verification. But they never responded to it on email. They called me back and verbally informed me. That’s why I don’t know if I can sue. I do have them following up asking for more details and not giving clarity of whether they are e-verified through multiple emails
Might be worth your time to at least talk to an immigration lawyer then. I don't have any experience in the area, but it can't hurt.
Just talk to your current company. I opened a LLC before and e-verify is so easy to apply. Tell them it’s a win win win situation for all of them.
Yeah I’m requesting them. Idk why they keep saying they won’t do it because they’ll have to move all new employees to e-verify
It’s more like politics by HR and you need to have a game plan to convince them to switch. You MUST use a soft approach!!! I had a delayed start in a position because HR didn’t want to use the 90 day graceful period when I was renewing my passport. One lady in HR can determine your fate. https://www.e-verify.gov/about-e-verify/questions-and-answers Offer to pay for any legal consultation to make things as easy as possible for that person who handles this. Talk to your managers to get their support.
OP you can DM me for Microsoft referral However, Interview loops will be not shorter
30 days is pretty tough, try small companies that has very short interview process
The unfortunate thing is most of those companies won't be able to sponsor a visa 😕
(note that this is from my own experience which has been exclusively in companies from 5 to 150 employees)
At least you got laid
I can’t believe people could actually be so heartless to joke about a situation like this
At least you got laid
Laid and screwed. Lucky.
TLDR
I have one month to find a job to extend my OPT. Need referrals and advice on what to do
As f1 opt, you can do some research work with your school professor to stop the clock. Also, you get 150 unemployment days. Read about it.
