I'm debating if I should take a contract job at MSFT. I got approached by a recruiter from an Indian outsourcing company called KTRIAN. The role is ML engineer. The rate is actually not bad, $45/hour with (probably shitty) benefits. Fyi, I was a new grad MLE at Meta for 5 months. Thoughts? I'm on OPT so I'll take anything I can get. Will this be a downgrade for my career? Edit: I plan to take this job while still looking elsewhere. I wonder if I should include this in my resume.
It's definitely a downgrade, but it beats the alternative of not working. Why not take the contract role, gain experience, and continue to look?
Thank you, that's what I'm thinking. I don't know how long it will take for me to find another job as I'm still technically a new grad and there aren't a lot of openings for junior engineers.
You also might get converted at some point. I know people on Blind tend to trash Microsoft, but my spouse spent 15 years there; he enjoyed the work and never felt particularly underpaid.
Resume stain, don’t take unless you need it to stay in the country
I would take it, it’s not the time for emotions / resume tailoring. You can always get back to where you were or better once things stabilize a bit
If you can’t find anything else and need it for visa reasons…then go for it. Be aware that a lot of companies are pulling this same thing (low pay contractor roles) because they’re hoping to get Meta/Amazon/Google talent for low pay while being easily disposable.
For the resume stain comments, is there a reason to include the experience on the resume? Can't it be conveniently skipped?
Take it for the paycheck and visa purposes but hold off on publicizing it on LinkedIn etc and keep aggressively job hunting.
I did this 4 years ago. Laid off from a faang with only 1 h1 attempt left. The only option I had her vendor/contractor role. Ended up taking a vendor role at msft.
Did you get the H1b in last attempt?
No. Moved to Canada. Best decision I made. The lower pay is worth the stability, especially in the current climate.
Take the job. You might be hired after….continue looking
I’d take the contract job, OP. I’ve been approached with a lot of contract roles, and it seems as if that’s the trend the industry is heading in. To echo others here, it would be great to have a source of income to ride out the recession and wait until things get back to normal. Check and see if you can put that you contracted for Microsoft at your resume. Good luck, OP. TC: 62K
Yes it is definitely the trend. I think it’s the way that they want to maybe test the employee or hire for part time role?
That’s what I was thinking too. Temp work also exists, and it would be an alternative to a 90 day probation period for an FTE role. My first company, a small startup, did the same thing to me to have me try and earn a FTE role.

U sure there really isnt anything else? Downgrade is an understatement.
what do you mean? After all he will work in Microsoft office
The industry is stacked against junior engineers right now as there are abundant choices from more experienced laid off engineers. I plan to still do this while looking for other jobs, but I just want this to not eat up my OPT unemployment days.
