I was laid off the first time in June 2022 and joined a new role in November 2022. Unfortunately, I was let go by them in September 2023. My resume now has two short stints and I haven’t received a single interview call this time. Maybe recruiters presume that I like job hopping and hence, don’t want to entertain me. But, in reality, I’ve just been terribly unlucky. Can any recruiters please shed some light on this? Would you give me a chance or reject me as a job hopper? Really desperately looking for help - woule be greatly appreciated My professional summary July 2019 - Graduated college and started working full time June 2021 - Quit first job July 2021 - Joined next company June 2022 - Laid off September 2022 - Started a short term contract role November 2022 - Contract finished, joined new company September 2023 - Laid off again #layoff #resumehelp #interviews
OP, sorry to hear. It’s likely not you, it’s the choppy job market and current economic conditions. You can address it in interviews but don’t dwell. Focus on your skill set and what you can offer. Did you receive any feedback from your prior boss on performance related issues?
I really appreciate the honest feedback. I didn’t receive any such feedback. But I’m left wondering if my resume makes it look like it was due to performance issues. Can you please elaborate what made you think so and maybe I can rectify it?
Simple leave out the contract role.
I appreciate your response, thank you! Do I need to mention in my resume that I was laid off while elaborating on my responsibilties for the role?
Not in your resume. It might come up in conversations with the recruiter
Can you get references from the short term jobs? If asked about short term. Even if they don’t reach out, better to have that on the table.
Look to get a job asap and try to stick with company for atleast a couple years. Hiring managers mainly see only your last position so that will erase your previous experiences.
I appreciate it but I am just unable to get past resume screens at this point. I would want to stick for multiple years but I need a job for that
Have you looked at contract positions?
You can group the contract roles into one experience. I would also add (Contract) to the role and list all that you did and company you worked for stating it was just short term contracts Data Engineer, Premier Staffing Austin, TX Company 1 (6 month contract) - did x y z Company 2 (3 month contract) - did x y z
That’s a red flag dude.
Every company is going to verify employer history if you get an offer. Be up front/honest..if you have skills and can communicate, shouldn’t be an issue
No. This advice is bad. Read the other comments and educate yourself on how background checks work. Companies don’t have a database that they can query out of to see a users job history. Background checks are confirming if the job history on your resume that you provide them is correct. So if they leave out a role, it’s not possible for background checks to catch that.
Microsoft- Employment verification is not a background check, as stated. Go back to being an IC
You will be fine. I promise. It will take longer and some will judge you but just keep at it. Many hiring managers are biased against many different things - won't hire older people, won't hire younger people, won't hire people who spent 15 years at one company, won't hire people who has lots of 1 year stints, or breaks etc etc. Just keep at it. It is a numbers game and someone will give you a chance. It is a lot of work to look for job even in the best scenarios so just keep at it - at a very high pace of output, applications, interviews, networking and get good at ignoring rejection and pushing on. Harry Potter author was turned down 12 times after she even got an agent that thought it had merit - no is not no - it is just no from that ONE PERSON. Early career you are more affordable so there will be roles!
Moral of the story: stop being loyal to companies
