Hi Team Blind! I’m a self-taught indie iOS developer from non-tech background currently making about $60K with my app. And I’m wondering how you guys think about my chances to get an engineer interview. About myself: After getting out of my previous non-tech job where I spent about a year, I’ve self-studied, released, and maintained a photo editor/album iOS app for about 4 years. The app has 800k+ total download and $350k total revenue for the last 4 years with 4.5 Star rating. I did planning, UI/UX design, SEO and FB marketing, and customer service as well (although I think that won’t help much to land a SWE job). The app is written in Swift. It makes API calls to microsoft azure for face recognition and then organizes / decorates photos based on the result - so its got some multithreading involved among other things. Other frameworks it uses include AVFoundation, Photos and CoreData. Then I released my second iOS app a few weeks ago. Its like a mini Photoshop, optimized for logo design. I worked on this one for about 4-5 months. I self studied coding with youtube, lots of googling and GitHub code study. No bootcamp, because I couldn’t afford it. It was a tough journey. Right now my family is having a hard time financially and my income from the app dropped significantly over the last year, so I decided to look for a secure job, preferably in established companies rather than early startups. So I’m starting with leetcode and shooting for FAANG iOS engineer position either in NYC or bay area, and I was wondering what my chances are to even get an interview. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. TC: $60K (app revenue) YOE: 4 (as an indie developer) #amazon #facebook #google #apple #swe #interview
What do you mean by Indie developer? Indian?
Oh it means independent - so basically i meant that I work for myself.
I see.Thanks for the clarification.
Congratulations on the app revenue! It should get you interviews for sure, getting revenue must be much harder than LC Hard

Why is it so G*damn difficult to move money out of India
Skimmed this post, similar to how I’d skim a resume. I’d definitely be interested in interviewing you. My guess is you’d land an L4 job at FANG/top tech. Possibility that you could get L5, but that’s really hard to gauge until I understand what the depth of your abilities are. Also, working solo is very different from large software company. So to play it safe, would bucket in L4 unless I have proof for L5
Thank you! That’s super helpful! With no engineers in my network, I’ve been gauging my chances solely relying on internet search and it’s been so stressful… again thank you so much!!
