Layoff

Have you guys ever been a part of lay off? How did you guys deal with it? Edit: worst part : on h1b

Google Mickey May 22, 2018

Yep. Best thing to ever happen to me. Got me off my ass to go improve my skills, network, and find a job paying 40% more.

Microsoft SeIR87 May 22, 2018

Agreed, a bitter sweet experience.

Yeah, this is a good market to have been laid off in. Got let go less than 60 days ago, had 4 job offers as of last week, start someplace new week after next with a 15% bump in salary and a 67% bump in TC, plus a bump in grade.

Microsoft flymflam May 22, 2018

Man.. that sucks..

Salesforce dfxcx May 22, 2018

Got laid off in the depths of recession in 2009. It made me stronger and my TC now is 4x of what I made then

1) updated my resume 2) got on a whole bunch of hiring platforms 3) started contactig people in my network 4) picked my kids up from school (my wife usually does) and took them for ice cream.

Reg H1B: yes. That makes it thrice as difficult. But you still have to pick up yourself and go kick butt. I got laid of in 2008 recession and barely made it through without going out of status. What other replies aren’t mentioning - lower your criteria for where you’d be willing to work. I know I know. Sounds horrible. But that is the reality if you’re on H1. Live to fight another day. First find a job. Settle in. Then find another better one. Will I be able to practice what I have just preached - I hope so. Good luck!!

What will happen if im out of status, but not unlawful presence? My i94 is valid till 2020

You have 60 days from last date you worked (and were paid for it). AFAIK... out of status implies unlawful presence. That will lead to major issues in you getting your next application/visa approved. Don’t let that happen. Find a job and apply for H1... NOT in PP. Let the application take its time. Keep finding the next job in the mean time.

It's a hard time mate, a lot of companies are actually not hiring h1b folks the buy American and hire American is now having an impact.

I worked for a shit company going through massive layoffs. I hoped to get laid off every day, but no such luck. I stuck it out for a year for CV reasons. When I joined a new, awesome company, several people including my interviewer said "wow, I worked there and it sucked. Why did you stay so long?

IBM Paycheck Aug 16, 2018

Sounds like me. I’m waiting to be laid off. Doesn’t seem like it’s happening so I have to quit soon

Microsoft qQza72 May 22, 2018

Realised a job is a job is a job. Life became much better later.

Pretty difficult on a personal level, because it makes you feel ‘not good enough’. On a professional level, it pushes you to redefine your skills, improve and find new opportunities. It has goods and bads.

HPE Splunk May 22, 2018

Never been affected personally but have survived 3 mass layoffs at HPE and it is absolutely soul crushing to see your friends get cut, but also feeling more vulnerable than ever knowing that you could also lose your job at any day. Quality of work of those remaining significantly goes down.

Having survived mass layoffs before, I've come to the conclusion I'd rather be laid off than one of the survivors.
