They've laid off the majority of the Trello engineering team thru restructures, and the last 20 were laid off officially this week. It's now a very skeleton ops team maintaining it, whilst they continue to try to shift people into Jira Work Management. Trello has been told they can't compete with Asana or Monday.
What's the eol for Trello?
Maintenance mode is wording internally, which in Atlassian means "we have an EOL target, probably within 2 years"
Sunsetting the ONE atlassian product people use voluntarily 🥲
That’s unfortunate. But tbh, selling team Collab tools is a dead end these days. They’re commodities at this point. Atlassian is better off focusing on DevOps, service mgmt, and products that’re complex, customized, and sticky.
Storage (Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, etc.) and messaging (Teams, Slack, etc.) are commodity businesses. These categories dont have much surface area for feature development (storage is just storage for the most part). High surface area products like CRM (Salesforce, Hubspot) and work management (Asana, Monday) are not commodity businesses. There’s a reason why the hyperscalers haven’t been able to provide competitive products. So perhaps when you mean “collab”, the content + communication pillars are easy to commodotize. But not the coordination pillar (Asana, etc.)
I don’t think the hyperscalers have been all that focussed on work management, MS Project has always been the red headed step child (I used to work at Msft). If Msft chose to take the gloves off they’d demolish Monday & Asana quite easily imo (over time). Msft chose to focus on communication tools (slack, Zoom, etc) because they directly challenged Msft chokehold on email as the hub for all enterprise work, which is their cash cow.
Are the layoffs officially reported ? I’ve not heard anything regarding layoffs
No, read Confluence/Slack and check Bye pages though. It sucks they aren't announcing it.
Move that card to the Completed column!!!
How serious is Jira about their Work Management product? Aren’t they REALLY late to the market given that Asana/Monday have been around since the early 2010s and already generate hundreds of millions in revenue per year?
Heard similar, what crappy leadership doesn’t at least announce the layoffs
Damn Trello was the only good thing I used at Atlassian
Trello is a a fun but unopinionated product that people love to use for FREE and PERSONAL use. It’s not a project management power tool like its competition nor does it have any really defensible feature advantages. I think Atlassian botched this acquisition by not pushing Trello to be more B2B early on, but that would’ve gone against being “Trello-y”. 🙄

That sucks. That was actually one product from Atlassian that I used myself. Will need to export my boards.
