So bad to see so many people being laid off at Google, Meta and Amazon. These companies don't know how to create a robust organization where employees could be moved around instead of doing layoffs. They just think these employees as disposable elements. Pathetic. But on a higher note, these are the same companies which don't know how to benefit from AI and ML much. Google: search and ad are at jeopardy because of the rise of ML and AI based information retrieval. Meta: Million dollar ML scientists produce world class research papers, but no idea how to monetize those ideas. Amazon: Azure, Oracle, new cloud providers (Super Micro, Lambda) and on-prem are gobbling up the new ML/AI cloud services, where Amazon just keeps serving legacy workloads. You know who are not doing layoffs: Microsoft, Nvidia, AMD, etc. These people do have some ideas on how to benefit from AI and ML.
Microsoft did layoffs, but nvidia you are the king with apple.
op how does apple have ML vision? Google, Meta seem to be doing lot more than them
I've not mentioned Apple. They don't have any idea on what to do with ML. They have lagged behind, and with ML, you can't afford to, because everything moves at godspeed.
That's what I'm wondering
You forgot Walmart 😎 is not doing layoffs.
They laid off warehouse workers
At Nvidia as well, we have the leverage (GPU) and are making the right drivers, data centre grade machine, self driving car, etc but we aren't using ML either. Our research group is also publishing a lot of papers but we aren't turning it into products either. I don't see where we have products which are using the power of ML. Please correct me if I'm wrong
Interesting
We don't need ML products as long as long others keep building ML products. We show the utility of ML with our research prototype and demos. AV is the only ML product we do have, and major auto companies are our customers.
Amd pays 1/5 th of the companies you mentioned above. So if you worked in one of those companies for a year you earned more than 5 years salary of an average amd employee. So isn't much difference. Yes you can compare Nvidia to them, not amd. Msft is in cost cutting mode , ask Msft employees. Don't take me wrong, I'm not saying they are doing is right, it's utmost insane. The companies which laid off is not due to lack of leadership, it's due to greed of leadership for higher stocks. Grant is round the corner. I like your analysis of the all the companies. But none has good AI leadership, it's just few are very overhyped.
AMD does not pay 1/5th of Nvidia for hdw.
Crackpot post. You're telling me a principal hw engr at FAANG makes $1M a year in base salary? Or 1.5M TC? GTFO.... My base at AMD is 205k and TC ranges anywhere from 300 to 420 depending on stock price.
Well if you’ve seen the vision of nvidia about ai/ml you wouldn’t be making this post
Bro drinking the NVDA coolaid and throwing shade on FAANG. Times are good for us now, but every big tech and chip startup is coming after our margins. Be very worried and work hard.
So what if it’s weeknd. You have deadline to meet. - Manager
At least you are all multi millionaires by now (I hope)
Lol you seem so ill informed. If not for the GPU demand NVIDIA wouldn't have AI/ML strategy either. There is so much stuff NVIDIA talks about with embodied AI, robot agents etc and apart from blog posts I don't see anything happening. Just because stock is increasing and there are no layoffs doesn't mean you have a vision lol.
“If not for GPU demand “ yes that’s literally the vision that Nvidia has and literally why the stock keeps going up. They were smart to create this market like 20 years ago and now just have to keep innovating and running away from the competition. It’s as dumb as saying “if not for iPhone demand Apple would be nowhere” yeah no shit iPhones also dominate and rule the word of smartphones.
Lol what a stupid take Nvidia didn't create GPUs for AI. They created it for a whole different reason. What stupid example comparing it to an iPhone.
The reality is that ML just isn't that useful, it's advertized as the end of all technology but really when you think deeply about it, it doesn't do much except impress consumers. People forgot about Siri, they are currently forgetting about ChatGPT. The great leap of AI were vision models but that's it.
You clearly have no idea how ML is being utilized in different industries. It's literally going to change every industry on the face of the earth.
It's always talk nothing ever concrete.

I’m fairly sure MSFT did do layoffs at one point of time last year if not more than once.
I'm talking about this year's current round of layoffs.
Oh this year is barely a week old, have there been layoffs from Meta and Amazon already?
