I want a lay-off if I got a big severance.
This post is presumptive and extremely cruel. Perhaps you are on a team of losers but there are far more who got the cut who were high quality, valuable team members with skillets aligning to market. The layoffs had nothing to do with performance and everything to do with manager favoritism. This is a truth that needs to be exposed. So don’t disrespect the thousands laid off in this way.
You must have never had to work with GTS/GBS or Sales and love using Notes and Sametime.
I work in Services. Yes most staff is low quality across the board because everyone good leaves and executive leadership is horrible. But I know of many very good performers who were cut in this round, even people who were billed to clients. It is well known how bad the favoritism is in Services and that the people who get cut are often most valuable to clients.
I've told managers here that we could likely layoff 50% of the staff, and we will be just fine. That's what it's going to come down to eventually.
I am surprised IBM still has engineers in the US...
They do - but it’s an uphill battle against time - you have to be asymmetrically/order of magnitude better than average in terms of productivity and/or you’ve to be lucky - both of which tend to be negatively correlated with time. There are some very good ones in the US though that care about the company - but a very small fraction for a company of 300K employees.
This is one of those things people day and they should reflect on what it means about their character. Never wish anyone bad. People have mouths to feed and families to take care of. You move up through your own actions not through what you say about others
IBM used to be a great tech giant that helped NASA with the lunar missions. The company shouldn't have let the standards fall so low that it turned into a place where people just need a job to feed their kids.
IBM's biggest mistake was missing the PC market in favor of supporting their mainframes.
I thought that too at Oracle. But, at the end of the day, ppl have kids/family to take care of. I wish this on noone.
What positions were included in the layoff?
Probably everything
Just wanted to say, it's all relative, for a person who works in cutting edge research and inventing new technology, what IBM or many of us do is , useless. If you think layoffs were the right thing to do for IBM , so be it but no point in gloating. karma is bi&$+ and it maybe you some day and that day you won't be able to see yourself in the mirror, if you labeled anyone laid off as inepts , imbeciles.

How’s capitalism going?
i remember their layoffs in 2008 or was it 2009. so many golden parachutes ppl were hoping they’d be the lucky ones
Same at HP back in 2009. They got to stay for 6 months and got 4 weeks salary for every year work.
like stay for 6mo without work to do? just chill at home? or do some simple stuff at work?
