I took some entry-level Java courses back in college (~10 years ago). Since then my focus in the field has been on systems design/engineering, storage, network, virtualization. Most companies are requiring SDE managers to pass coding interviews. Any advice on where to start? I just finished a beginner course on Udemy but still struggled with beginner questions on HackerRank. #java #engineering #software #swe #interview

Pretty common in non-tech centric finance companies. Same here at VISA
Worked my way up through the operations side of the house - from entry level up through senior engineer. Manager opening in software development came up - was able to get the position based on soft skills and previous technical background (architecture/systems design) - there was no coding interview portion for this internal switch.
+1 to the question. Donât worry about negative comments like how do you manage developers without being a developer yourself. With that logic CEO should know every technology under the sun. Spend 4-6 months on good refresher course, leetCode and reach at least leetcode medium. This is difficult but very much doable. Start with free YouTube tutorials..
Appreciate the response. đ

What do you use now?
Iâm a manager of Java developers now, and my current group doesnât require hands-on coding. I can read the code, tell you what it does, perform high-level code reviews to ensure functionality is matching what the story describes - but I wouldnât be able to pick up a story on my own and bang out the code. The more companies I look at externally though, they require those skills to get in the door. So I feel fairly stuck at the moment unless I really upskill myself.
