Leave Google for Amazon?

I’m currently an L4 at Google for 2 years located in Seattle with no clear path to promotion. I’m getting tired of living in Seattle and want to move to NYC. I have been unable to find any internal transfer roles in NYC for the past 5 months. I’m debating taking an Amazon offer for an AWS team in NYC. This would be a lateral move with essentially the same pay after ny state taxes. Could anyone tell me if this is a good or terrible idea? or TC: 302k YOE: 7 years Amazon Offer: 322k

Lateral move for same pay at worse company? Uh… no, unless you can’t find anything else in NYC.

F*** companies NYC >>>> Seattle

NYC => less net income

What’s the point of paying extra rent in NYC when you won’t even have time to enjoy it? AWS is a huge risk if you have a good team and manager at Google already. I would wait it out till the market recovers.

Google knows how to treat employees and at Amazon you are treated worse than a slave. Don’t - just don’t brother

Nope. You'll have the same issues with the promo path even in Amazon. It's very hit and miss in terms of landing up with good teams and work. I'd rather stay in Google, unless you don't like your work there. I can't speak for work culture etc at Google. But you have enough stories for Amazon and most are true. If you find a good team, Amazon is not that bad.

Just adding that good teams in Amazon are relatively rare

Amazon iLOX17 Apr 5

Good teams are possibly extinct by now with the recent trim everywhere. Even so, reorgs are so common that teams don't last more than a year or two.

You accounted for taxes, but missed several other factors. NYC COL will be higher than SEA. Amazon’s compensation assumes 15% stock growth while G doesn’t. So the real allocated stocks for amazon are 15% less each consecutive year. Amazon’s 410k match is only 50% and caps at max 4% employee contribution. Amazon has virtually no benefits as compared to google. Check this benefits comparison. https://www.levels.fyi/benefits/?companies=Amazon,Google

On top of that, Amazon's 401K is vested at year 3...

Negotiate for more or get another L5 offer. Google will keep you chasing the carrot.

You wanna experience burnout?

Amazon LCoder Apr 3

why not? If you're smart enough, you will easily navigate any toxic team and get promoted to L6 within a couple of years.

One bad manager and no matter how smart you are, you'll be put on PIP. My first red flag should have been seeing a 6 year Amazon veteran get PIPPED by a new manager.
