Got an L6 offer from Amazon in the bay area. I expect to be an X7 (Director) in the next perf cycle and am doing pretty well at Walmart. However, work is getting monotonous and I am not too impressed with our focus. I am torn if I should take the offer or stay put for a year or so and then leave as X7? As an X7, I have an opportunity at Walmart to lead a big team with possibly a bigger charter. AMZ moves me to FANG with ~90K salary increase. My interviewers were really smart and I had a great interview experience. However, I am worried about personal growth and decent WLB. I do not mind working hard and am looking for long term professional , personal and financial growth. current TC ~ 360K new TC ~450K YOE ~ 11 #faang #amazon
450k for L6 is pretty awesome! Amazon all the time/any day
Op can you please share YOE?

Thank you!
That's a hard one. I'd request conversations with sr sdm + director at amazon to better understand your role, expectations, and the business direction. If it grows, then you'll definitely do well as 450k is like the absolute top of the band for l6 sdm and they likely want you to take on big scope that's higher end l6
Thanks so much. Do you mind elaborating L6 scope vs high end L) scope? Would it help to take on more challenging scope to grow as L7 fairly quickly? I had a conversation with my hiring manager and have a decent understanding of the direction, however, it was a sell call.
Haha. Ofc it was a sell call, you have a top band L6 offer, they definitely want you bad :) L6 in general is broad (for both eng + mgr). It can be as early as line manager (where you look over perhaps 5-8 people) but it can also be as high as functionally a sr manager/M2 at other companies (you manage managers). Though generally once you are functioning as a strong M2 with 30+ people you are working towards your L7 promo. As is the case with most companies, your promo has two main components - 1. work at the scope of the next level and 2. deliver successfully and have business impact at that next level So if you do join, gunning for L7 is about making sure you are not just a line manager (you are building multiple teams underneath you) and that you also have business scope that actually encompasses multiple teams worth of work. Keep in mind that if part of your business impact falls short then your teams can be cut and you will fail to meet promo, so this part is important.
When in doubt, go with more TC, and prestigue in this case
Thanks for your insights! Want to optimize for global maximization, local maximizations have not helped me in my career so far :)
L6 TC is only $450K TC? Seems low. E5 Facebook is almost 450 TC
450K is very good for L6. Are you sure it’s L6? Seems more in line with L7.
I would wait for the the director title at Walmart. Can make a larger jump after that.
I second this, get the title and you can jump ship , once you start doing your day job, TC doesn’t come to mind, you will be thinking more about how to grow and impact... in a new team and a company that’s really hard. So be a director and you can make the move after that.
Is this a tech role?
Yes!
If you can handle the stress and toxic culture give it a go. I’ll be super careful if have family and need wlb. Dev n pip are frequent here if you are on the wrong side of manager. I saw someone moved here n got fired after 6 months, he moved his whole family here. A big mess.
Do you mentor people? Could you mentor me?
Are you already in the bay area?
Yes!
I would stay put if I were you. Sounds looks your new role will bring new challenges, which is what you're looking for
