Job market is brutal for SWEs 🥲
Hello, I am in a situation where I want to leave Amazon just couple months before my 2 year stock vest (15% = 6shares) I want to leave Amazon before they file for my H1b lottery for next year. Don't want to get stuck with them for whole approval process. But unfortunately, my stock vests in late March, exactly at the time when H1b results are declared. I think I have the option to leave before they apply ie somewhere in Feb 2022 but I would lose out on that vest. Trying to see if there a portion I can claim at it is so close and if someone has been in this situation before. TC - $150k SDE1
You can also negotiate a sign on bonus from new employer if you let recruiter know you’ll be leaving money on the table to join them
Just leave before it vests. They don't give any amount of vest if you don't make the date, doesn't matter if you were 1 day shy of vesting.
You can just opt out of the h1b process. Ignore the lawyers. You’re making a situation out of nothing lol That said, I don’t understand why you would want to opt out. It doesn’t tie to you to the employer, you can still leave before 10/1 on whatever status you’re currently holding.
How come? Even the H1b application is tied to the employer correct? I know that some employers would take in even if my application is pending approval(if selected in lottery). But I don't want to even wait for that ideally. Want to switch asap but was feeling a little bad to leave the money on the table so close to the vest and something I have worked so hard for. But like other people are saying, need to think long term and nothing beats the mental piece I think I would have.
18k and 13k after tax is small in the grand scheme of things, just switch and make your life happier
Could go lower too based on current headwinds
Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts. Appreciate it.
Visa trumps money. Don’t run after few thousand dollars when getting visa situations sorted can make you hundreds of thousands over your lifetime. Think longer term!

This. I left over 100k on the table but got the GC. All pays off in the long run
