I wanted to become a faculty at a University (in Mechanical Engg.), hence I was doing a postdoc. Since beginning of this year, postdoc supervisor started harassing and micromanaging me. He stopped me from publishing, denied to write recommendation letter and even sent his PhD students to spy on me! I constantly received threats and racist comments from him. I eventually escaped and got a different postdoc. My new lab is doing some good research in the area of bioinformatics. My work is to develop algorithms related to whole genome sequencing which is completely different for what I was doing before. The thing is that I have already decided to quit academia and become a software developer. How can I prepare myself to crack the coding interview? What are the companies which I should target. Is bioinformatics a good area to venture into? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As mechanical engg, my expertise was finite element analysis and simultion. I think there isnt much room for growth in this field. Also salaries are embarassing. I often feel that the harassment which I faced might have put me on the right track. But since I literally restarted my career at age of 30, I am a bit anxious and lost. π#engineer #interview #careershift #academics #harassment
Finite elements and simulation usually implies lots of C++, no? I think you would have a good chance of landing a dev job as long as you showcase your work. Show on GitHub stuff that you did, and maybe add some projects. Like make your simulations run on a cloud and add an. Ss Html interface.
