Someone know of a gameplan for grinding product design and making it to FAANG++ Two pre-requisites: 1. that you cannot share your current job's work 2. that you must continue to be employed by your current employer- can't change jobs Things I have identified so far: 1. Get portfolio featured on Awwwards 2. Design and build (can outsource this) an ios app on App Store 3. Start a shitty newsletter/thought leadership/design club shit and manage that community. 4. Make a figma project with 200 likes/duplicate metric. 5. Do 100 interaction designs and put them on dribble. #designer #design #faang #hiring
What? 🤔
Not one thing you’ve identified factors into anything design leaders care about. They need someone who can do the job, and to convince you can do the job you need to show examples of you doing the job and being able to talk about how you can talk about doing the job. That’s it.
Sorry to break it to you but you’re gonna have to figure out a way to get your design work out of the walled off gardens of GS. Worst-case you recreate a semblance of what it is you worked on there and then speak to the rest of it. I literally was point-blank told by a Meta recruiter something along the lines of “we don’t care if you can’t disclose your work. You have to show it. Everyone does. People from other places like Bloomberg that have signed an NDA have showed us their work…” Depending on where in GS you work at, the design work might be visually uninspiring but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that most employers are SUPER receptive to the technical complexity of the product work done at GS. Anyone can make generic dribbble porn but not everyone can get their head around the often convoluted things GS needs apps designed for, and that’s what interviewers are really looking to hear about.
Damn I am considering doing a side project app and running it as a not for profit business just to break out of finance
Please don’t do that... It screams “I’m a junior designer with no real work experience.” They will question why you have no real work to show, and you’ll set yourself up to be downleveled. Also, the vast majority of open design roles right now are for experienced hires. In the interview process you mainly get asked how you overcame challenges — whether it be with technical limitations, prickly colleagues, or navigating politics at a place like GS to actually bring something to fruition — and you’ll never be able to speak to any of these things with a side project.
WTF? 🤨
This is crazy 😂🤦🏾♀️
huh? what’s your role now?? you just need to worry to get recognized with the portfolio first.
Um… I never considered anything you have listed when I interviewed. Sounds cool though. If you can’t share your current job’s project, have you thought of stating it as NDA project in your password protected portfolio site? You can state design has been modified and remove some sort of info for this reason. Then you can modify your design, such as remove logos and change all the UI pattern style. You can even make the interaction cooler, but show your actual design process, exploration, iteration, outcome, etc. Well, if you only have worked at one company, you could mention it’s a freelance project so it’s not that obvious. In the end, we want to know what real project you have done and how you work, how you work through challenges and your collaboration style with different stakeholders.
Lol that doesn’t exist. Design isnt as binary as you think? What matters is your work (fit/polish, process, research, etc) And then your comms. Can you articulate your work well and can you explain your design decisions?
Blind is constant bullshit like this. Think it's time to delete this app.

No one gives a shit about any of these things. Just have a portfolio with good, real, work.
So you're telling me that there's no script to follow
Didn’t say there was no script. You just need to show that you’re good at your job. Everything you’ve listed are just vanity metrics. Don’t major in the minors.
