How common is it to actually get a level upgrade after a great performance during an on-site?
You must seriously rock it for someone to notice and call out that you are performing above the targeted level. Since the loop is likely not set up for the higher level, the recruiter would have to invite you to participate in another 2 or 3 rounds targeted at the next level. I know it happens, but I don’t see it happening frequently. I observe that this is because recruiters tend to bring candidates in for loops which are meant for a higher level than the resume would indicate. This is of course just from my own observations, I could be very far away from the truth.
I get the feeling from my phone interviews that they may be preparing for the chance that I’ll be leveled up. Additionally, all the people in the loop are pretty much a level or two above my interviewing level. Maybe wishful thinking. We’ll see.
I’m a bar raiser. I’ve seen us consider a top candidate for a higher level once or twice, but I’ve actually never seen us extend an offer at that higher level.
In that case, do you usually offer a TC at the top of that band? Also, did those candidates get promoted fairly quickly?
I’d guess very little to zero correlation to promotion, which is all about what you deliver after joining Amazon but not before you got here. On comp, maybe. Manager would probably be more willing to fight for a candidate who is almost qualified for a higher level, but we actually have some input in the offer process. It’s usually based on the candidates leverage, negotiations, and other offers.
My friend was interviewed for SDE1 and rocked it. They asked him to do an home assignment AFTER the on-site and was extended an offer for SDE2.
SDE1 to SDE2 is almost 50% TC increase, did he have a significant previous exp, mostly interns/fresh out of college join as SDE1
Yeah, he had 3 yoe and they didnt initially want to interview him for sde2. Since this is blind, he got offered 200k TC in seattle. Is that good or bad?
Zero, Amazon always hire a level below.
That’s a level update...
