Life at Autodesk

Autodesk has come complex apps out there that require engineers with strong software engineering/math backgrounds. From what I see though based on the research I have done, Autodesk is not known to pay really above market to its engineers. If that is indeed the case, and it's possible it is not, how is Autodesk able to hire and retain top talent? Also, the company's located in San Rafael, which is quite a distance away from Silicon Valley, which also may be a problem, possibly? What is the mean age for software developers at the company? I am asking this thinking that maybe it is mostly people in their 40s and 50s who prefer to settle down and raise families in San Rafael with lower cost of living instead of getting on LeetCode and preparing for FAANG interviews? TC: 300K YOE: 15 No, I am not at HP anymore.

How do game companies retain their talents? The work is quite rewarding.

HP noname002 OP May 9, 2020

Game companies are not all engineers. Maybe a fraction of the employees are. The rest focus on creating the game itself, which is drawing and scripting. And how much does for instance Blizzard pay? I think pretty competitively for Orange County

Pay is not everything. I spoke to few autodesk employees and they are extremely happy with the work life balance, quality of work and apparently the leadership makes sure the employees are happy. Also they have a great office location in San Francisco

We have a huge office in San Francisco right across the street from the ferry building. There is a mix of young and older people with families. Work life balance is great.

How about the pay? Is it competitive? What’s the TC for a senior engineer with 10 YOE?

Autodesk wndndkhsn May 10, 2020

noname002, I don’t think Autodesk will beat your current TC

Autodesk is a great company to work, WLB is good. If you are worth, you can get 200 or more, perks are great, every four years you get six weeks sabbaticals. Senior leadership care abt employees, so employees tend to stay longer here. FYI San Rafael is not low living cost - it is Marin County.

Autodesk does not pay at the top of bands. But it does pay a fair balance considering the whole package imo. Tech tends to overcompensate in salary, while sacrificing wlb for example.

A fair WLB compared to what you make. Holiday policy is great. Most of the managers are understanding and don’t check on you vacation days. 6 weeks sabbatical for every 4 years of service. This is followed like a culture and people don’t pass on this. Mandatory paid shutdown from Christmas to new year day. Flexible wfh policy. Pay is ok. You got to keep licking above you to get good refreshers but don’t expect in 100Ks RSU like other Bay Area pay masters. You will get around 40-50k worth refreshers yearly provided you do what I told before well. The other point mostly most of them ignore is generous ESPP. the price gets locked for 2 years. So in 2015/16/17 the price was locked at some $40/share and while it tripled later. But on this front, I feel party is over. I don’t think it will double & triple from here.

How's the WLB for other departments? Specifically sales and finance?

Autodesk DouP01 May 21, 2020

Employees are older folks that bought their housing pre-dot com bubble. Not that many young + ambitious folks.

I would pay 50k for a peaceful sleep and a good WLB, so would not mind getting 50k less than the FAANG companies . There are other ways you can compensate the TC difference with the extra time you get.
