Here are a few tips and tricks I have used over the course of my career. I am not an SWE. *****CLARIFICATION FOR POINT #1***** Many people here have taken issue with the first point. Allow me to clarify: I do not want to remove it because it is a big part of how I have navigated the past 2+ years of WFH that is expected to continue. My intention was to show stakeholders that you are staying busy and not slacking off. I am in a customer facing role, and 95% of the time I’ve done this is for a customer. It was not intended to create a toxic work environment, put pressure on teammates, or actually work unnecessary hours. But the reality is many of us have gaps in our work day (see #5 for 80/20 rule) that used to be filled with office chatter. Now we sit around and chill, which makes many people nervous. This is the solution that I used. Others have proposed sending this email early in the morning, which is also a good idea. For those of you who believe that work should ONLY be done from 8am-5pm, feel free to disregard this piece of advice. I am also a white male. Many people think I am desi from this. ***** 1. Send emails to customers, managers, and stakeholders late at night or on the weekends. You can even write it during the day, and queue it up at to send later in the day. This will make you look productive around the clock 2. Check in with your team on slack, even just to small talk. It goes a long way. 3. Send public accolades to people as often as possible. Thank them for their work. If you’re in person, bring them coffee or doughnuts 4. Always double the amount of time you think something will take. Never work too quickly. The quicker you work, the more they’re expect of you. Managers will always push 20% more than what you give. 5. Live by the 80/20 rule. Kill it when you need to, and save your energy when you don’t. Live is not consistent. There are days where I get a weeks worth of work done, and weeks where I get days worth of work done. So many people focus on the WRONG goals, pouring in hours and resources. 6. GET ALONG WITH EVERYONE. Especially those in power. It’s the most important piece of advice. Every single person I have ever met who got fired, PIP’d, promotion denied, etc. had an argument or falling out with at least one manager or teammate 100% of them time. That’s what I got. Feel free to agree or disagree. But this has gone a long way in my career. TC: $280K

Not to be an asshole, but the TC deflated this entire post 😂 Good stuff, but you’re like an L5 or L6
L6, but not an SWE 😂
Damn 280k seems like peanuts on Blind eh ? What kind of utopia are we living in
Fuck, forgot this one
Sure if you want to get fired. Great idea!
You lost me at #1 You’d come off as someone who can’t get their stuff done during normal hours. I only work with people who have a life outside of being my servant.
Not necessarily. Depends on what it is.
Nah, this is a lie The Man told you to have you work outside your normal hours. I.e. wage theft. Carrot and the stick, don’t be a simp. Source: I am The Man
Sort of disagree with #1. It’s really toxic to work overtime.
Not working overtime. Taking a break during the day and send an email at night. I probably work 30 hours a week.
It's a well known fact that swes in my team wait till 8:30am to push out CRs which is like saying without saying that you slogged through the night.
Valuable life kit like advice there OP. Its rare to find a place that pays well and has minimal to no toxicity/politics. You have to play the game to stay in the game. To everyone who says this is toxic culture, vote with your feet
Yeah, exactly! Quite frankly, I have been like this my whole career and it has done nothing but move me ahead. So many people complain. You either play the game or get left behind!
In theory, everyone dislikes #1. Who wouldn't? You only have two options, stay true and risk being looked like a slacker or play the game. I was as non toxic as a toddler's crayola stick, but I've learned to play the game now and still have my sanity intact.
I disagree with #1 so strongly. All that does is make other people feel obligated to work outside of office hours. It also comes off as not being able to manage your time well.
This is about getting ahead. Not about making other people feel a certain way. Also, it’s all about what you are emailing. For example, I will tell my boss “I can take care of that tomorrow” then I’ll send it out late at night. It’s all strategic.
You must be in your mid-20s. You’ll outgrow this thought process. Focus on winning, don’t focus on not losing.
This guy already beat you by seven years OP. https://www.yegor256.com/2015/10/06/how-to-be-good-office-slave.html
The person who wrote that works at Albertsons now right?
Hahahaaaa! Just the title is enough to make my day 😂
1. Definitely do that, but actually write those messages at that time -- the information will be fresh which is what those individuals need. If you sit on something longer than a day or two, it's stale and useless for most people. 2. Agreed there too. Not only that, you should actively post stuff to group Slack channels too because it shows you're a "team player" 3. Buying them lunch is a nice gesture too. 4. Always assume you have half as much time as you think you do. Be the one to get things done fast -- if you drag your feet, people know and talk. Do it often enough and people won't work with you. Always manage up so your boss doesn't give you work to do. 5. 80/20 rule exists but not like you think. The reality is that 80% of the work will take 20% with the remaining 20% taking 80% of the time. 6. Yes, but you have to do more than that. You have to be liked / respected by those people too. I have seen many people get PIPed by managers that got along with their subordinates which gave them time to find another job -- otherwise they'd be terminated instantly. More or less a good post - I give it a B.
Thank you!
Agree an almost all the points and now i get why some people always send CR after working hours. They want to show that they are workaholic. Lol
Yup lol
Nope. It shows they take their jobs seriously. Not everyone can be a Chad and get away with it.
Nobody gets along with everyone. We all have colleagues we hate. We just tolerate.
Tolerate politely
Hate is a bit of a strong word?
