I recently learnt about the like-kind exchange (1031) technique used in real estate (to avoid liquidity/taxes). I wonder if there is a like-kind exchange solution to exchange stock market equity as well. Any alternatives? PS: I have a lot of company stock options that I would like to exchange to diversify without making them liquid and pay taxes. TC ~320k, YOE 3
What is 'a lot?' there are a few possibilities, but usually only makes sense at the $1m+ range
I have about $700k in vested equity so far (if I sell in secondary markets). So not a million just yet but I can soon reach there. What are the few possibilities if you can share?
'opportunity zone' investment, where you sell your appreciated asset now, defer the gain until 2026. The new investment needs to be a real estate development project in certain areas, and there are big funds designed just to cover this. A few other tax benefits (0 tax on the real estate gains through 2030; 10% 'discount' on the cap gains you will owe in 2026 on your asset). Some states like California don't play along. There are exchange funds but won't work if your security is not publicly traded
Opportunity zones I’m taking my crypto in to hemp lol
