LinkedIn Algos: Should I remove my 'less valuable' contacts?

Don't want to be a dick, but common sense tells me LinkedIn will use sophisticated ML algos in their service. Stuff that can affect my career like how often I come up recommended to recruiters, etc. Maybe they even have a candidate power score they are selling. I don't know... Never been a recruiter. I'll bet my testicles that LinkedIn is also using my network in their algos. My simple question: if I remove all non FAANG and/or 'low value' connections will that improve my standing in LinkedIn algos?

What are you looking for? Get seen more often by recruiters? Get a premium. If not, add a lot of people, but don't spam too much

Prioritize Ivy League PhDs/MBAs, and FAANGM.

No. Basic non recruiter account ranks by degree of connection+keyword, more connections the better because you're more likely to be within 2 degrees. Recruiter accounts are keyword driven. The more frequent you update your profile the more likely you're being refreshed in a recruiter's saved search which they get update emails if they set it up.

I actually did it. I removed all connections that I felt were low value. Not sure if it helped me get attention from recruiters at FAANGM but it sure did help avoid attention from recruiters at shady startups and unwanted invitations from other low value connections. It also improved the quality of my LinkedIn feed tremendously. I say do it ;)

Unless you're a hiring manager and need to hire good people trapped in poor places :(

Totally agree, my approach does admit a lot of false negatives but I absolutely cannot tolerate the false positives ruining my feed and recommendations. It’s a decision that I have decided to live with.

OP picking your linkedin friends based on fang status - true or not, that's kind of pathetic

Apple industry Feb 21, 2019

I reserve LinkedIn for business and Facebook for friends. Many LinkedIn feeds have been ruined by people who don’t respect that distinction and share unprofessional shit like how having a baby changed their perspective of life and photos of their crappy lunch. I am ruthless on LinkedIn. If someone starts sharing shit like that and axing them from LinkedIn doesn’t professionally/personally impact me, I axe them. The list of people I axed also includes fang folks.

I also report their content as “inappropriate for LinkedIn” as your personal life isn’t appropriate on LinkedIn.

No. I landed my current role through an external recruiter I have many connections, including recruiters in 3rd world countries. And with 1.5 YOE at unknown startups, a useless non-CS college degree and a profile packed with relevant keywords, I still had FB and Amazon recruiters reach out without applying or being referred.

Bloomberg i485 Feb 21, 2019

1.5 yoe, non-cs degree and FB/G recruiters reaching out doesn't quite check out buddy.

Bloomberg iVX372 Feb 21, 2019

Not Google. FB and Amazon Doubt me all you want. I frankly don't care. TBH I failed their interviews anyway, having never used LeetCode

Bloomberg i485 Feb 21, 2019

if this logic is true then your connections will remove you first lol.

Don't ever bet your testicles on LinkedIn software. You'll become a Greyworm. In case you didn't get it: LinkedIn is the most useless product ever. Their engineers are overpaid. I won't be surprised if Satya fucks them in the future.

Apple industry Feb 21, 2019

This lol

Microsoft desidude Feb 21, 2019

Lol Any sane person would choose LinkedIn over Amazon. Much better pay, food, WLB. and lot of ML opportunities

You are assuming your current non-fang connections won’t go to fang in future. And you are assuming current fang connections won’t join non-fang companies in future. Give it a rest.

Even if they leave FAANG it will be on list of employers they work for. Won't you use that as a feature as well? Companies your network has worked for..
