I have an offer for Sr SWE. Anyone at LinkedIn have insight into how long it takes to get to Staff for good performers? I'm assuming it's even slower for external Sr hires? #swe #software #engineering TC: 300
2 FY for me. Obviously depends on your performance. I have seen people getting after 1 year as well.
Depends on what organization and other biases. It was very slow for me. 4 years in and i was still said "you are there" but no promotions. I had to leave to get better promotion to a level which was 1+ year away. I am a woman of color and an immigrant.
Hi, do you mind me DM you? I am in a similar situation.
Not everyone makes it to Staff. You need to exceed as Sr swe. Possible in 2-3yrs if you consistently perform at a staff level. Some orgs are slow to promote too. You need to know what your org values more.
how to land sr at linkedin? a lot of system design?
Also depends on you TC and if it increases significantly (thanks to MSFT) , best of luck. What’s you sr swe tc offer for LI?
I’ve noticed a lot of people stuck at senior for 4+ years. Swe to senior is a lot easier than senior to staff so I wouldn’t bet on being able to land and get a quick promo
It’s very very random, basically the stars have to align: 1. You have to perform above sr level (this is under your control of course) 2. You have to have a staff level project that meets the craftsmanship bar (somewhat under your control if you’re willing to switch teams) 3. Your manager has to not suck( most of the managers at LI suck because they were promoted either due to favoritism or their engineering skills - neither lead to effective managers ) 4. Your sr mgr/director has to like you 5. You have to get lucky with the reviewers/committee… if they’ve never heard of you or don’t like you, they’ll nit pick your packet to death
Hi Op, did you get an idea?
2-3 year
“good performer” is not good enough, you need to Exceed Expectations and perform at Staff level for a while
