Hi Blind, I was just wondering what you think is a better choice. I recently received offers from Amazon and LinkedIn, and I am leaning towards going to Amazon because of my interest in deep learning. However, the TC difference even with COL adjustment is quite large.

AWS AI (Seattle) - 160K ML Engineer

Pros - VERY interesting product and deep learning opportunity, close friends in the city, working with ML researchers

Cons - possibly bad wlb, little annual raises, 401k vesting after 3 years, fewer holidays

LinkedIn AI (Sunnyvale) - 240K SWE

Pros - great compensation, great perks, end-to-end ownership, holidays

Cons - suburbs can be boring, no friends in the area, work doesnt seem very interesting

Both opportunities are quite a step up for me, so I would be excited to join either. I calculate LinkedIn is worth 50K more with perks minus COL adjustments, and this will allow me to pay off my student loans faster. But I also feel like the growth at Amazon in the future outweigh this difference.

EDIT: This is before negotiation and both levels are entry positions. (L4 and SWE)

Everyone I know who works at LinkedIn loves it. Everyone I know at amazon is just waiting to vest.

Ha, maybe I’m crazy. But I guess “interesting work” doesn’t justify the difference in compensation.

LinkedIn is not known for tech. AWS is the market leader in web services.

Senior swe starts above 260-270k. This is definitely swe.

See if they are able to offer a position in LinkedIn NYC, then you get city living and an office in Empire State Building.

Not much AI in the LinkedIn nyc office. You could try for the LinkedIn sf office though.

Pretty sure if LinkedIn opens a Seattle office they will have problems filling Sunnyvale headcount. That's the case with Google right now, their Seattle and NYC headcount fills fast, they struggle with MTV.

I feel like the AWS project is really interesting, so I don’t know if I will find a cooler project later in the future.
