24 F, moving to Seattle area to work at Microsoft. Base pay 112k. I've found some potential roommates via MSFT's unofficial discord (verify by sending pictures of your offer letter). These potential roommates seem nice but my parents keep urging me to just live alone. But living alone would be like at least 800 dollars more expensive in raw rent, maybe more. When I was in university I mostly lived alone but I never had time to be lonely because I'm dumb af so I had to constantly study to keep up. On one hand I definitely see the benefits if this person ends up being a compatible flatmate IRL (we get along, pays their part diligently and is generally clean and reasonable), but I can also see how disastrous my first year of work could go if they were on the other end of the spectrum... Of course, saving money is always desirable too. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated #MSFT #housing #seattle #redmond #bellevue #newgrad
I think at 24 having a roommate in a new city could be fun! My only advice is get your own bathroom. Your relationship with this potential roommate will be a lot better for it
How long of a lease are you signing up? What's the way out if you don't click and see going through hell after 2 weeks. Just imagine the worst and start working upwards.
Realistically a year for the best price. In the worst case scenario breaking lease would be pretty hassle some I think
If you are new to the city, find a roommate with a similar socio-economic background who has lived there for couple of years at least and already has a social circle. It will help you a lot to meet new people in a new place. You can always move out after one year or whenever your roommates lease ends (in case you move in with them on an existing lease). That's what I would do in a new city.
Try temporary accommodation in beginning , meet future room mates in person then decide !! Else live alone if you can’t wait till then
Parents, they are also going to tell your future husband what to do. Better draw boundaries now
Well you could look at it this way. A msft roommate thing. They work with your company too and may have something to loose if they become a bad actor. With room mates always consider your deposit forget(forfeit mistype) once moved in. If it goes bad cut your losses and move. If it's good they are a source of socialization. And friends. Once your carrier motivated these things can be hard to find with-in a tech community. The question you should ask yourself is where do you want to put your money. 112 k if you don't need to live next to campus is easy
It depends what you value more privacy or save more of your income

Too personal to answer. I prefer to live alone and would pay, but for others it might help with socialization
