So I can either pick a rent controlled 2700$ smallish one bedroom with rent control, no w/d but decent state or live in a 300$ cheaper apartment complex next to Bart in Dublin or West Dublin with a 50 minute comnute to work. What do I pick? I love the idea of having a quiet weekend beside the pool, larger apartment, gym etc. but I would have to pay for it with a 2 hour total Bart conmute each work day. The rent controlled buildings in SF are not "walk to work" either because of hills and distance, so living in SF is still an hour of commuting each day in total. Does anybody take a longer commute in the name of better quality of life? I can't get roommates in SF since I'm married and we value our privacy.
Live in Dublin, save $$$. Figure out maybe wfh a day or two, play some games like chess or watch some Netflix , get some work done if you have the energy.
Yes, it works out fine. If you live right next to Bart it’s probably the best. It takes around 45 minutes via BART to the city. If you live in the city as well you will most likely end up traveling close to that much since public transportation in the city isn’t great(unless you live next to BART).
I would take Dublin. I like bart. But, I recommend you look in Oakland as well. Decent rents still and much shorter bart ride.
This is a no brainer. Don't forget to consider that each trip to/from SF on BART will cost you between $6 and $8 (even on top of a monthly unlimited SF transit card). So most or all of your rent savings in Dublin is offset by higher monthly transit costs. Since you can have a 20 min commute for $3k rent in SF (which is easily doable) and monthly unlimited SF transit costs $94, you're paying only $100 more to live in SF proper (assuming 21 $14 round trip tickets to/from the city per month). Saving $100 per month to live in Dublin for 21 hours of wasted time is equivalent to working a side job for less than $5/hr after tax.
This would be very true if the places were the same. Dublin will get me 100 extra sq ft, washer/drier in unit, Air Conditioning, pool and and parking
To each their own, I guess. I'd take the place in SF in a heartbeat since I love that city and there is relatively little to do in Dublin. Space has never mattered much to me since I have few possessions

Taking a longer commute for QoL may have the opposite effect. Something to consider http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0042098013498280
