Living in South Bay/near SJC but work in SF?

How realistic is it to work at a company that's in SF but live in the SJC area? I'm specifically interested in working for Airbnb, but insight from anyone that works in SF is welcome.

I’m dealing with the reverse situation!

Be ready to spend ~3 hrs a day on commute.

Microsoft roPk65 OP Aug 14, 2018

That's pretty much how I thought it would be.

Salesforce FrcSls Aug 14, 2018

If that is something you are comfortable with, go for it.

Why not live closer or in SF? If you are looking for affordable, there’s Glen Park, San Bruno - decent, well connected places within and around City

Microsoft roPk65 OP Aug 14, 2018

My girlfriend lives a few hours east of the bay, so I was hoping to live somewhere that I'd more easily be able to get out of the bay area to see her, or for her to see me.

Live in Oakland or even Union City/Fre then, depending on how South East you have to travel

Negotiate 2 to 3 days of WFH. Travel is manageable with few days of wfh

Microsoft roPk65 OP Aug 14, 2018

For sure WFH would be critical for me to consider this.

I did that commute for 2.5 years, but was working in the FiDi. It worked for me because: * I don’t have kids * I could work remote * I would walk in from the Caltrain station, which I liked and would get some exercise (but lengthened the commute time to 2 hours 1 way) * Caltrain is better than BART (on the days people weren’t committing suicide on the tracks)

Microsoft roPk65 OP Aug 14, 2018

I already have a 1 hour one way commute that I am barely okay with. 2 hours sounds terrible! If I could work remotely a few days a week it might be alright though.

I have been doing it for 7 years. It sucks. It really sucks. I would only do it if you were sure you were only going to do it for a couple of years.

Your social life will suck but your rent is much better. Did this for about a year (Sunnyvale to SF). I'd recommend East Bay for you. Maybe try near the end of one of the Bart lines

Vertivco Fast Papua Aug 14, 2018

Ah. What group of things does one need to do to improve social life?

Cruise Automation ✉️ Aug 14, 2018

? It really depends on your friend group but I'd say there's more opportunities for fun in San Francisco. With that said, I still think it should be totally fine to live in the South Bay on weekdays (and then go to SF on weekends). There's lots of people your age in South Bay to build up a social life on weekdays - you just have to find them (and be able to catch trains quickly).

I lived much closer in Fremont and bart to SF everyday. The problem is the ride back from SF to south/east bay is too crowded that you either try to get a seat by take a few stops back, which plus waiting take 30min longer, or you suffocate in bart and exhausted when arrive home. If you don't live nearby Bart/Caltrain station, to leave time parking and avoid missing train, easily add another 30mins on your commute. Plus, if bart/Caltrain delay, good luck with 200% lyft/uber surge. I would only imagine commute from South bay worth than mine. At the end it's just too exauating and I quit to change to a 15min drive commute. If they have nice shuttle, then maybe try for a year. Nice mean frequent, fast route, close to your home, not too crowded and has wifi of course. Otherwise either live closer than San Bruno /West Oakland or get another job.

1) seats always free up after you pass downtown Oakland heading east 2) you don't need to pay for Uber/Lyft if there's a delay - just catch the next one. Maybe apologize for being late for standup and then leave the house earlier next time

Sounds like you have never met those 3hours+ delay where no train pass :) Also sounds like you have never taken Fremont train 5pm-7pm. You can't even get in if you're in mogamory or embarcadero, and they are full until Union city.
