I’m about to hit 30 and realized that trading work life balance for compensation isn’t attractive to me. I refuse to work for companies that don’t give you good WLB. The pay at Optum sucks, but the WLB is good. I’m still looking at higher paying options, but companies that don’t give their employees good WLB are automatically out. The thing that helped my mental health the most is realizing I could keel over tomorrow and never be able to enjoy the retirement we are all working so hard to attain. Now I am all about living in the present. Still saving for retirement but whose to say how long we’ll each live? If I can have enough money and time off to travel, have experiences, and afford a house in the present, then that is all I want. Is anyone else trying to worry less about retiring early and more about working a consistent 40-45 hours (or less) a week and having lots of PTO? I don’t feel burnt out in my job - I feel under appreciated. #mentalhealth
Good for you. I like 💰 and I hustle hard to get it
Just don’t wear yourself out. Peace!
Gonna be different for everyone. Money makes me happy because it enables me to buy fun things and pay for fun experiences, so I don’t mind putting in extra hours during the week so I can have fun on the weekends if it means high TC. But it sounds like you have different values and priorities, and I thinks it’s great you’ve been able to recognize them.
You can have both- pay AND WLB
That is what I am after!
What’s your current TC?
I’ve been hustling since high school and I think the thing that excites me the most about trying to find a job that pays enough for living expenses, retirement and fun money is that I don’t have to do anymore hustle jobs on the weekends. I can FINALLY have free weekends to do stuff with friends. Getting my time back is the most exciting thing. Told my friends I’ll be throwing a hustle retirement party as soon as I can find a better paying job. 🥳
I agree
I'm in the middle I want higher pay. I don't mind some extra hours here and there to push something past the finish line. But I have issues with orgs, where I'm working a lot of extra hours to compensate for bad management, inability to prioritize work, not listening to improvement suggestions. Which again leads to more work
Definitely feel that! It sounds like you’re under appreciated too. Hope things get better all around!
You know what’s better? A job that pays reasonably well (not top of the market), has awesome benefits, awesome wlb (<30 hr weekly) so that you can work 10hr/week on your own hustle that makes extra money. And if/when that hustle blows up big, you can retire. If it doesn’t you still have awesome wlb 👊
Sometimes you might be payed so well that it's hard to choose WLB
You have achieved nirvana!
