Spouse applied for a job. Told the recruiter a base salary X. Interviewed. Got an offer. The base was on par with what spouse requested but was a little below what one might expect from checking salary websites. No stock or sign-on bonus. Via email, spouse expressed excitement and intention to accept the offer but asked politely if anything could be done to bring up the base (1.05X), add a bonus (0.05X), or add some stock. The offer was rescinded. The reason given was that spouse had originally stated salary X, so asking about any more than that meant they'd rescind the offer and move on to another candidate. Hiring manager was away the week spouse tried to negotiate. Hiring manager said he would've negotiated had he been in the office. I didn't expect that the offer would be rescinded just for asking whether an increase could happen. I didn't tell spouse to negotiate, but now I wish I'd told spouse just to accept the original offer. The company is Syneos Health. My TC: ~$250k pre-correction
Red flag. It might not even be due to your spouse asking if the offer can be negotiated. They might have had a change in their hiring plans?
Sounds like something Samsung would do. Actually happened to me ~3-4 years ago
I had an initial offer rescinded. It is a weird environment out there. I did not put in my notice.
Name and shame please
Massive red flag. Negotiating an offer is a NORMAL part of the process. If at the top of their range, they could have said they are firm on the offer. But nah, they have a crappy reason to not negotiate and pulled the offer. You and your spouse dodged a bullet. Please also take this as a painful lesson to never state your salary before you’re ready to negotiate. No matter how many uncomfortable questions the recruiter asks. Watch some videos and do some reading on salary negotiation before starting the recruiting process again.
ouch, this is really painful. Sorry to hear that. The only time I saw an offer get rescinded at that stage is when candidate was too pushy about a certain TC level at Google. The email exchange was something like - candidate: I want +15% - recruiter: we're topped off, I can't do anything more - candidate: what about +8%? - recruiter: I'm sorry, you're at the top of our range.. you can always try to interview for a higher role? - candidate: can't you guys even do +8%? the recruiter rescinded.
I work for syneos korea and they didnt even give me the opportunity to negotiate lmao
Sounds like a pretty big red flag to me. Maybe it's for the best. Best of luck to you and your spouse.
