Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
Hey everyone! I have a Secret Clearance. Received an offer from Lockheed Martin Fire and Missiles Control in Texas. I will have 1.5 YOE at start date (1 year and 5 months right now). The offer is: GNC Engineer Level 1 88k base 0~4k bonus I was accepted in Georgia Tech for a M.S. in CS which they seemed to really like. However, when I applied for the job, I wasn’t in yet so it’s not officially documented (I checked their profile on me). Can/should I try to negotiate this offer? I would like a Level 2 position but am not confident they’d offer it. I was hoping for maybe 94k base? Current TC: 86K in lower COL city. #engineer #engineer #offer #negotiateoffer
Are you a US citizen ?
Yes
You don't officially meet the minimum for a 2, but I can tell you from experience that they won't consider you for an in-place promotion for at least a year. So I'd push for it now. LM will reimburse your tuition with only a 1 year vest, so consider that. If you already have a clearance they're probably more likely to give you something rather than let you walk. You should at least be able to get a signing bonus. GNC is at least a higher pay band than software engineer.
Gotcha, I’ll definitely push for it now then! Also, would you GNC is a good career to go for? How much would you negotiate for?
GNC is stable. Lots of jobs at aero, MFC and space within LM... That being said, as you get better at software engineering you'll hate it because most GNC at the company, at least that I've seen, is done in Matlab and auto coded to C. Also will never pay what a SWE can make in the private sector. A level 5 will make around 180 right now, which is about where you can expect to get to staying on the technical path 20 years from now.
Why would you want to work for a company that makes weapons? Seems like you could try working for a less morally bankrupt company.
Pretty much everything is morally horrible in tech. Weapons, clinically addictive social media that's destroying the next generation's brains, horribly polluting consumer electronics that don't really need to exist, shopping sites that ship throw away crap Chinese goods at bottom prices, etc. There's not much out there that is actually good. Maybe some true renewable energy attempts.
Congrats on the job offer, I'm also in Texas. I'd counter but keep expectations low because that might be close to the top of your pay grade. I'm a level 3 and they declined my counter because I was just under the top of my pay grade. Did they offer you a sign-on bonus?
No sign on bonus. Do you think I’d be close enough in terms of YOE for a level 2? Also, may I ask what they offered and what you countered for/gained?
Level 2 requires minimum 2 years YoE with a bachelors degree, but no experience if you have a masters degree. My offer (Level 3) was $130k base, $40k sign-on bonus, and 4% target annual bonus. They declined my counter for $140k base and said that was their best offer, so I accepted.
Ask for more. If they decline, ask for a sign on bonus.
Dfw isn't lcol area anymore.
Always ask for more, around 10%, they aren't making multiple offers and picking the cheapest. Level 2 should come around 2 years. You can always ask what the Comp Ratio is for the offer, ask them if you are at a ratio of one at least. This sounds like a decent offer for LCOL from LM though for a level 1.
Should I try to negotiate for a level 2? They seemed to really appreciate that I’m in a masters program for CS. If I don’t get it, would LM consider me for promotion with 1.5 years at GE and 0.5 years at LM?
You can always ask, you would need to point out you have the minimum requirements of two years of related but non intern experience. It's unlikely you would get a promo half of a year in either, nor would another manager transfer you. But, if they are having a hard time staffing, or the manager doesn't follow the rules, anything can happen. Asking won't hurt, provide the evidence of direct experience and you won't hurt anybody's feelings. They probably made you an offer with room to negotiate, so again just ask with some decent reasoning and you'll get something.
