Looking for new opportunities

Hi, SWE here. Been working at this startup for about a year and am already getting the impression that there is not a lot of growth here. In addition to being underpaid, there is a lot of talk of the company getting sold in the next year and I know that I need to start pursuing other opportunities or risk going down with the ship. I have two years of experience and have done a wide range of work here, including prompt engineering and model training for LLMs, creating APIs in JavaScript, and managing clusters in GKE/ leveraging other cloud utilities to name a few. I have gotten to do a lot of cool stuff here, and would have loved to keep working here were it not for the low pay and financial uncertainty of the company. Recently I have been getting the urge to get my feet wet with game development opportunities because it is something that I am passionate about. In my free time, I love mapping out interactions and designing intuitive systems for games, but also feel like I don't have a lot of projects in Unity or Unreal engine that will sufficiently credentialise myself to pivot into the industry immediately. I'd love to get feedback from you guys and learn if anybody has had experiences similar to my own, and if anybody has advice or opportunities available so that I can get out of my current position and start moving my career forward.

Gotta be honest, it's a really bad time to transition into games. That said, if you're going to keep an eye out for opportunities regardless, never a bad idea to build up a portfolio of personal game projects related to your area of expertise.

Why is it a really bad time?

riot, blizzard, epic, unity all did layoffs. I was a riot intern and I think one person got a return offer out of 85 of us. They are bleeding cash rn with no end in sight.
