I was thinking of leaving IBM, but I may to come back later in my life. Someone suggested if I leave to work for a competitor it would look... And it would be even worse if I leave to work for a client (I'm a consultant). Do you think that's true, in that IBM would even care?
They won't remember when you come back - everyone is everyone's competition these days. Do what's right for you in the short and medium term. Don't worry about going back so much
+1. It is quite hard to find a tech company which is not a client, partner or competitor of IBM. Do what is best for you.
Why in the world would you ever go back to IBM after leaving?
The reason I want to leave is because I'm not happy at my geographical location and they won't let me transfer for at least another year.... But IBM overall think is ok... And I'm not an engineer or top school graduate so I don't have alot better options coming easily, ibm have alot of jobs, and I have many more years of work ahead of me..... So there might come a time I need them to hire me again.
At IBM, people come & go (even for competitor) all the time. Most often at a higher level than if they had stayed. I know one guy who did it 4x!
Hahahha thats awesome
??
There are old-school IBM execs that think once you have left IBM, you have betrayed the company and are longer worthy. Don't worry about them - they will soon retire or be replaced if IBM is around long enough in its current form for you to come back.
Leaving for a competitor is bad, but I doubt they would care if it was for a client. Just give them the general spiel that you want to try out industry, lesson travel etc. Other consultants will definitely understand. Going to a competitor and coming back is possible, although it will be very difficult to manage those optics
