Some Background: -------------------------- I have been preparing for a job change for 9 months. First 3 months total leetcode preparations ( 3 friends preparing ). I also read about all remote work jobs available with all new startups and ipos. So from my current desk job (with less salary, legacy crud app) I wanted to find a full remote with product focus where I can learn something. H1-B is a factor when we apply for some startups who are in Series A to Z rounds. But I always knew this would be a long road. April Round 1: ------------------ Started sending out resumes. Companies like Zillow, Coinbase, Upstart, sofi, Doordash..... I got automated email replies -> Your skill set doesn't match. We coined terms LOVE LETTERS (hired) and BREAK UP LETTERS (unfortunately sorry) I always get Amazon responses :) I did an amazon onsite 6th time. (I have lost count honestly) Didn't get an offer. (They will give another chance in 6 months) But kept improving over time. Status of friends: ---------------------- My one friend got job at good new ipo'd company. Another got a good mid tier one but not in the new ones. May Round 2: ------------------- Rewrote resume. Replied to the same companies. I have to do something different. Signed up on hired.com. :) Jun Round 3: ------------------ Built new personal portfolio website after learning tailwind css. Drafted letter with specific attention mentioning my portfolio website. My focus was to tell them "you can even individually ship and build" July Round 4: ------------------ Replied again to the same companies with no changes. Status of friend: --------------------- 2nd friend got offers from Google and Facebook. Yeah, that's a smart one. :) First friend agrees. Only he has doubts. :) Oct: ----- Things started moving. Got interview with sofi, wayfair (after 4th round) and google and upstart, leantaas from hired.com Yeah me 3 LOVE LETTERS :) first time 6 years. Cleared first three interviews with leantaas, upstart and sofi. Decided to stop wayfair and google as you should never be shackled by to many choices Offer Negotiation: LeanTaas, Upstart and Sofi ------------------------------------------------------------- Bear in mind i have listened to levels.fyi ceo I have done my research. First request leantaas to give me some time so i can fairly review all options. Hr drops email please take your time and come back to us as a fail safe we will always present you with an offer. Sofi started negotiations and I asked for a matching offer from upstart. Fallout in offer negotiations: ------------------------------------- Upstart drops email we are ready for with an offer got a call at 6 PM and the recruiter told me we are not moving forward as I am not a cultural fit. Hr told me senior director of engineering had a HUNCH. LeanTaas dropped the email we already moved on you should grab and run with the sofi offer. After dropping numbers to 215k sofi dropped an email today morning "due to budget restriction the position is closed and good luck in your job search" 3 BREAK UP LETTERS. :( I wanted to scream you know at recruiters but then I thought they have no control over decisions why should i yell at them. SHIT HIT THE FANS finally. And ironically I HAD HUNCH that something might go wrong with sofi too. Future Plans: (It's been 9 months) --------------------------------------------- What now Like "Richard in silicon valley" what else i can do I am a developer all I can do is write code. Will do some more leetcode, design.... Starting from zero with "Round 5" Will also appreciate if I get few referrals. Thanks for listening. We always see stories like i mad 15 million. Now I am rich. Here is mine something new and heart breaking. #sde #engineering #software #swe
Wtf are these random ass companies. They’re not worth going to anyways. Practice more leetcode, you shouldn’t be failing Amazon. Amazon interview should be easy as balls.
What are right ones? please let me know I will drop them email or apply using their career portals.
Faang, but seeing as you failed Amazon…. I would go back and do 300 LC questions.
Because the companies probably knew you were playing them against each other and they don’t have time for that shit
I only asked for 1 week not more. They already wasted lot of engineering hours why would they just make fun of candidate?? I still think things are not this worse.
They’re not making fun of you they have other candidates that are an easier path to acceptance
I can feel your pain. Dm me if you want referral in Compass.
Sure. Will do
Reach out to Google and wayfair - likely that they’ll be ok with resuming the interview process.
Dropped them email today.
Hopefully you’re interviewing is more coherent and concise than what I just tried to read through, because damn that was hard. Curious what you said to the Upstart director for them to make that comment?
He asked me only one question, Time 30 min. 1. What do you think is good software? Then floor was open for my questions.
That doesn’t answer my question, which sort of suggests how your interviews must’ve gone. My advice: sign up for some mock interviews. I think that will help you out.
Work on your articulation skills. LC is not the only thing companies look for. This post gives a glimpse of how the behavior round must have been. Don't take it in negative sense, just some constructive criticism.
Would you point out specific things? It will help me improve.
For example, learn the story building skill. Have a structure of start, middle and end. Add facts where relevant. You could have simplified the whole companies and offers narrative. Again, I am just going by what you posted here. Now, apply this to your interviews. Build strong stories of behavior FAQ.
Try Microsoft
“as you should never be shackled by to many choices” lol what is that supposed to mean?
I don't think any company will accept you as a fail safe lol.
Want a ref to Microsoft? Dm me
I am thinking of joining new comps where with equity life becomes better down the line. Every where we go we overwork always so think better overwork where it can be financially rewarding.
