15 YoE, PhD, known face on the Open Source community. Based on Scandinavia in a small company. I got contacted by Google for a specific position in Sydney, the position was very similar to what I have been doing the last 10 years, so I decided to give it a try. Everything went relatively fast: phone interview, onsite, HC. I got a phone conversation with the leader of the team in Australia and there was good feelings in good ends. So far so good. Two days later I receive a call from the recruiter telling me how the offer from Google is going to look like. TL/DR: TC 160k USD with a base well under 100 (cant remember the details sorry). How do they expect that I move my family, sell my apartment, lose 1/2 of my holidays and find new school for my kids losing more than half of our family income!? Why have they wasted so much time and resources on my recruitment when the offer is to unrealistic? I told my concerns to the recruiter, who will come back with the final offer next week, but I have no hope. Their excuse is that I do not have a competing offer and that the Australian market is like that. I want this to be a learning experience for me, so Iooking into retrospective: - Ask for the salary range before going to an onsite - Faang pays much less that real hardware companies - Google interview process for hardware is plain stupid, I haven't got a proper question about hardware and plenty leetcode - Do multiple recruitment process at the same time, even if you do not like the other companies. - levels.fyi salaries on the USA are useless anywhere else PS: Everyone here talks about levels and titles, but I haven't got any details of the level of the position nor the title. #google #sydney #lowball #offer
Ask for two more koalas per year and a sign-on platypus
Thanks for sharing, but it’s really interesting which level did they placed you. Sounds like top of L4 swe for me in Sydney
I have no experience with Google levels, but based on what I can find online, doesn't my experience match better L5? At least I have been offered before "Principal engineer" roles. Anyway, not s big fan of titles
Principal is L6 in Google
Is it possible part of the discrepancy is cost of living differences?
Actually, Sydney is more expensive in terms of rent, so I do not think so.
Well there goes that idea.
I talk about USD because that is the currency most people can relate to. Yes, I expect to get paid more than 150k AUD. Sydney seems to be veeery expensive, and I am not moving alone, my family comes with me.
So did you end up asking for the range? I'm curious myself, although I'd be more along the lines of L3/4.
Location is the biggest factor here.
