Tldr: is it realistic to pivot from mechanical engineering to data science. Just wondering what do you guys think. Got a masters in mechanical engineering. Currently im working as a "superintendent for rotational equipment" (another name is mechanical supervisor) in oil&gas. When i am deployed i work about 2months, 12h daily with breaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and then i get 20days off at home. As you can see work&life balance is shit, but i do get a lot of free time which i can use to develop skills. I picked up python, sql and ml from udacity and udemy. My dream job would be to work remotely as DA/DS. Im thinking of ditching job and going for a bit lower pay as BA and work my way to DA/DS over 1-3years, and then switch to remote. Am i dreaming, is my plan viable at all? Im sorry for the rant, and if i missed the forum#data #dataanalytics #datascience
Hey recently graduated mechanical engineer here (Canada) . I stopped going to classes for the last two years of my degree and only worked on ML projects. Then I extended my coursework by 4 months so I'd be eligible for a coop in ML, which I got at a startup. Now I'm doing ML R&D at a university full time and hopefully the next step is ML at a FAANG. I know you won't be able to take my route, but take it from me, without a doubt it's possible if you love it. TC: 70K CAD

Yes, you can absolutely make the transition. I did from ME electro design engineering to Sales Eng, TAM, and Solution Architecture. I made the transition by getting into a different role at my existing company that had more exposure to customers and IoT technology, then self-learning by building apps and websites, before applying to a startup in SF and making the leap.
Thank you, i needed input from someone who already did what im trying to do. I guess i ll just have to learn enough to become employable :)
