Wondering what people think between working for Lyft vs. Google. Specifically I have a Lyft offer for Senior vs. a Google L4. Google of course has a much lower base but the total comp is sort of comparable. Also, any idea about what could I expect in total comp from Google for lets say a high end L4 given the Lyft offer?
Does L4 map to Sr. at Lyft? Or did you bomb the G interview?
L4 at Google might map to L4 at Lyft. I was given L4 offer at Lyft as a new grad with Bachelors (vs E3 at FB).
T5 is lyft senior. Might just be google down leveling proactively.
Lyft and Google are both good. Congrats! I would say the decision may be more of where do you want to live? Living in SF is costly but fun, or a long commute otherwise. No doubt Google will beat the offer, but Lyft seems like a good place to work and grow with the company.
negotiate hard on the Lyft offer if you care about comp. we don't have bonuses. very few people got raises or refreshers, and even those who did were unhappy with the amount.
Geez...I think lyft learned from that, I wish people would give it a rest
not from my experience... no policy change... better communication of existing policy only... I didn't get a bump... am looking other places
Thanks for all the replies so far. I won't say I exactly bombed the interview at G but there were no design interviews so may be they were already thinking L4 going into the interview. Lyft says it's a high T5 with 190 base and total comp ~310. So far G has not matched (let along beating it) and base may go down to 165 and still waiting to hear on the total comp. I need to do another interview if I want L5 @ G. I am a senior at MSFT (63) with ~8 yr exp.
T5? That's a pretty strong offer
I switched to Google from msft in a similar situation. 7yrs exp L63 to L4. I don't think L5 directly is possible. Took 2.5-3 years to get promoted to L5 and it's not guaranteed at all. You need skills and a bit of luck with team and project. I'm switching to Uber L5 now. Google is a good resume investment but you'll jump forward in your career by a few years if you take the Lyft offer
very high base... above midpoint for total comp... bring up no refreshers or bonuses and they might bump up RSUs or signing bonus... signing bonus can go up to 50k
If total comp is "similar", push hard on the equity from Lyft. It's all funny money for now.
Google is huge now and internal mobility isn't as easy. I would take the Lyft offer.
