Hi Blind, I recently got an internship offer from Lyft and I am really excited about it. However, with layoffs today and general uncertainty I am very worried about cancelation or no return offers being given next year given I am a junior. I am currently doing a fall internship at Amazon and think I can get return intern. I'd strongly prefer doing Lyft because of growth/team interest/TC etc. but also general worries. Anyone at Lyft have advice?
Lots of interns this year got return offers. No return offers, including those from last year and this year, got rescinded so far. Given that prop 22 has also passed, I cannot see any reason why this would change in the future.
I heard from friends it was actually hard to get a return offer this year. Also the package was like ~240k first year TC which hasn’t changed from pre-Covid. That seems crazy to me since it doesn’t seem sustainable since Lyft doesn’t seem to be las cautious as Uber and Airbnb after the massive 20-25% layoffs. Any thoughts or insights into this? It’s why I didn’t even apply to an internship at Lyft this summer.
All the interns I met this year got return offers, but perhaps it depends on the org (I’m in rideshare, which is one of the most critical orgs). As far as I know, uber has been hiring lots new grads in the past couple months as well, so I’m not sure how Lyft is being less cautious.
Go back to Amazon. It's always Day 1! Lyft's future is drier than my taint after a good scrubbing.
But amazon tc + no negotiation policy is so bad
But the free bananas
What layoffs?
Why not some other company? I personally would be careful about joining Lyft – I think they have no business future whatsoever, given their business model. I don’t believe it’s ever had a quarterly profit, and I don’t think it will.
Amazon winning this poll is depressing, was looking to leave this place :(
Not safe at Lyft if you’re concerned about potentially not getting a return offer. Even if Engineering isn’t affected (doesn’t seem to be confirmed), this doesn’t look good considering how recent the last round of layoffs were. Ex Lyft, don't do it. They can't even begin to recover until full vaccine is out and they're going to be dealing with a large recession with people not going out and partying.
An ex-summer 2020 SWE intern at Lyft here. Ignore the Amazon profile as I’m using a friend’s account. I would say my experience at Lyft was great even though I interned there right in the midst of the pandemic. I went through the same stress about the internship getting canceled since COVID just hit and there were already some talks about it. Thought they reduced it to 8 weeks and halved the pay they didn’t cancel it only because they consider internships to be a great pipeline for hiring talent. Was I scared about not getting a return offer? Yes absolutely. But I worked hard and communicated with my mentor and I got one. I know interns from the spring 2020 cohort who had 14 weeks to do their project and even more experience in the office than me but didn’t get a return. So the point I’m trying to make is don’t think too much about it. If you do a good job I’m sure you’ll get one. And if for some reason you don’t the experience of working there can open a lot of doors for you. I got calls from Waymo, Tesla and Nuro which I’m pretty sure happened because they saw my experience at Lyft. I know there are risks but you are young and smart and you’ll find a way if one thing doesn’t work out! Also if it helps there were around 180 interns in the summer cohort of which I think around 100 got returns which in my opinion is still pretty good. You just need to be one of them!! Hope this helps!! Good luck
University hiring didn’t get affected.
For now
