Would it be advisable to buy a house in Lynnwood (WA). I know it's a 20 mile drive from MS campus but with COVID, I don't expect us to be working 5 days a week from the office even after things get better. At the moment, I don't have a high budget and hence Lynnwood fits the bill. With link rail to Seattle coming up in 2024, it might have good overall connectivity. Appreciate any thoughts/ideas? Pros/Cons?
That is a hell of a commute. Remember that you'll be still be commuting to some degree, unless MS let's you WFH permanently, like Twitter.
Is the traffic really bad after 7pm too? I usually am in the office from 10-7 and leave work after 7.
After 7 pm is okay
The 405-5 interchange can be really rough during commute hours. Definitely check this out along with public transit/shuttle options. I live in Mill Creek and used to do a run into Bellevue every once in a while. It was brutal but so many advantages to living in lower cost of living area up here.
Thanks for sharing. Can you share some pros/advantages of living up there?
All of this falls into the category of ‘as compared to Seattle’... 1. Increased freedom for kids. 2. Better schools. 3. Better construction/newer homes from which to select (with much bigger yards, parks, etc). 4. Easier access to mountains/islands/farming communities for quick weekend trips. 5. So. Much. More. Affordable. We live well within our means but are comfortably able to afford great vacations, ‘expensive’ hobbies, upgrades to our home that make it a really nice place to be and have met our savings goals for college when our son was still in elementary school. I think we could potentially retire at 45 while other friends of ours are spending easily over $1M for a house and sweating other savings goals. My list of things I miss about the city is long too. Trade-offs.
That’s a loooooooong commute. Why don’t you try MountLake or broad view.
Thanks. Mountlake is pretty much the same commute as Lynnwood.
But it's cheaper
There is a ms shuttle somewhere so sure
There is a connect shuttle, pick-up near where 164th crosses I-5.
Is there gigabit internet in those parts? I would miss not having that, very much.
I have it at my house in mill creek.
I used to take vanpool to Bellevue campus which had all me employees starting from Lynnwood
You can pay money to make your commute shorter by using the express lanes on 405 to lynnwood. Should reduce your commute to 25-30mins
IMO I think its a good idea. This area is notorious for rising home values. With the new transit, I personally think it’ll pay off
