Got a offer for Senior software engineer from Capital one, LoB is Card Tech . How is the vibe ? It was informed that there will be on call rotation every few weeks , what should I expect ?
Welcome to the jungle. Now would be a good time to start reading Robert Greene.
Why does everyone I talk to on blind have this idea of Capital One, but everyone I talk to in person seems to think it's fine
The internal culture is rapidly changing for the worse. Perhaps the people you have spoken to have been lucky enough to have not been negatively affected it by it yet.
Firstly, congratulations on getting an offer! However, I’d warn you to be very mindful about joining Card Tech at the Principle Associate (internal leveling for Senior Software Engineer) level for just the Stack Ranking performance review process alone. Joining as an external hire is already quite difficult and stressful as there is a vast amount of tribal knowledge that some people are not always very open to sharing, which can be a very large disadvantage. Performance management at Capital One is quite biased/stressful already but it’s also even more cutthroat at the Principle Associate level, so just a heads up there. The stack ranking process is pretty much a black box and there are quite a few stories of newer hired people getting blind sided by a PIP after getting nothing but positive feedback from their managers in their regular 1-on-1 meetings with them. These are just things that I have heard here on Blind from others and also seen myself as well.
How often have you seen this? If the quota is around 10%, you have a pretty good chance of surviving right?
Quota changes each time they do performance management and can be as high as 15%/20% each time from what I have seen on Blind. Also, keep in mind that it is that percentage of people that are required to be marked for PIP when the performance management process occurs 2x each year (mid-year review and end of year review). Have seen quite a bit of this exact scenario where external new hires are unknowingly PIP fodder. They are at a massive disadvantage from the start compared to seasoned employees as most of the time external new hires are left completely in the dark about how to “play” the performance management game.
Congrats on the offer and welcome! Are you joining the Chicago office? Feel free to DM with any questions
Can I DM too?
Sure
Capital one is really not for external hires. The people who really succeed at this company are those who have joined right out of college and have no idea what it's like to work anywhere else. Or they are ex-MBB and are thus actually valued. The horror stories of stack ranking are true, and the pay actually doesn't compensate for that level of stress. Unless you are jobless, best to look elsewhere
This hits all the nails on the head. The company doesn’t compensate for the level of stress it puts on its employees. Once I hit my 2 year and vest my 401k I’m out
Senior SWE from Card Tech here. If you don’t have a better choice and need a job immediately, it’s fine. Otherwise, keep looking, the dick-comparing contest aka stack ranking performance review is pathetic.
Can anyone answer some questions about a specific team I'd be joining in Card LOB?
