I have over 5 YOE as a PM at Capital One, mapping to L5-L6 at most other companies I checked on Levels. I was an entrepreneur before this, a consulting business specifically about launching digital products, so it's really more like 10 YOE total. As a business owner I also got plenty of people leader experience, but not at my current job. I received good ratings throughout my time here, and if I'm asked why I wasn't promoted in an interview I would say "because I made several internal transfers to get experience in a variety of domains and wasn't really focused on it until now" The expanded reason is because I wasn't aware of "the game," so I didn't play it. and tend to avoid politics and visibility which turn out is super important in Corporate America. But, I'm willing to do what it takes to bump my TC up by $50,000 or more, whether that is A) try to get promoted here, B) get hired elsewhere at the same level but pays more, or C) get hired elsewhere a level higher (presumably for even more money, or at least a stepping stone to the job after this). As I look at job postings, I'm having trouble telling if I should be applying for jobs a level up. I believe that I can prove my qualifications. But how likely is that to happen at another large bank, FAANG, or smaller bank/tech company? Any tips to keep in mind? #pm #product #productmanager
Always C.. if that’s doesn’t work B. If they wanted to promote you, you would have been promoted by now
Hey thanks for the reply. Does "If C doesn't work" mean: A) Apply everywhere for higher level, and after X months then give up on that and apply everywhere at my current level, or B) Apply to the same company twice if needed, shooting for the higher level at first, but if I don't pass/get interviews/response then apply for a different role at my current level at that same company?
If it’s been 5 years and you haven’t been promoted it likely means that you aren’t a great fit for the role and should consider something else.
I'm sure you mean not a good fit for the 'company,' and should consider 'somewhere' else...since there are a variety of reasons someone might not be promoted in 5 years, including but not limited to the ones I provided..
Sadly no, I mean not fit for the role. You’ve spent 5 years in the role, without growth, even if it’s a different role then what you’d expect at another company. Unless you are VP+ at C1, 5 years is about 2 years too long even for people optimizing for skill development. Would encourage evaluating yourself at this stage of your career. Without strong skills to role fit, career upside will wane quickly.
5 years and no promo doesn't look good but you can spin the story differently when u apply for external roles. I think L5 is possible at FAANG, but prot not L6
A large pay increase to anywhere near FAANG without a level increase (and presumably more hours/stress) seems pretty ideal to me, actually.
are you a manager what is ur TC ? just fucking lie on your resume as you look for new positions and just say that you got promoted. they aint gonna fact check you.
unless you have some crazy launches, think you would be an IC4 profile at Meta. i am not sure what qualifications you are talking about that you think you can prove, but I don't see them in this post. blaming politics for junior promotions is not a very mature perspective. what makes you an impactful senior PM?
I asked for answers on how likely it is to be hired a level up assuming I have the necessary skills. You're not a recruiter and it is outside the scope of this post to share my resume or prove my skills and experience to you. I also don't like your condescending attitude. I explicitly said the reasons why I wasn't promoted, and if you actually read them then you would have understood that I'm not blaming anyone but myself for A) internally transferring several times, and B) not doing what is necessary (aka playing the game & seeking out visibility which everyone on Blind knows is effective).
yes, I have interviewed and hired for L4/5 PMs. good luck blaming politics for your lack of success! team change is no longer an excuse after half a decade good luck with your search!
C. 6 yoe and i got 2 offers for senior level
