MBA vs Masters in Comp Sci

Need some opinion. Which is better to pursue as of now in our tech industry? I want to look into moving into grad school management after a few years in tech, but was suggested that tech companies prefer candidate with stronger tech background to move up. Or is there a middle ground?

MS in computer science. Dont waste money on MBA.

Agreed, especially if you are looking to work at a top company

No. MBA sucks. U can become entrepreneur even if u have comp sci degree in bay area.

It depends OP. Do you want out of tech and to move to the business side of thing? Or do you want to be a manager rather than IC at some point

More into management/being a manager, business focus

The best way to do this is go to a top 10 MBA. Go to McKinsey Bain or bcg. Make EM, CTL or Project Leader. Come to microsoft amazon at 65 or L7. This is a 100% method.

This is a 7 year commitment plus enormous MBA debt. You're better off doing a CS masters in 1.5 years then getting a job as an L5 and working for 3 years w/ an internal manager promotion and then switch companies to get L7

You get hired at L4 after a CS Masters. So may take a little longer than you are estimating.

There is another thing I have seen that works. Go for a master's in management science or management information systems. It's a STEM degree and you can take technical courses. Seen people get hired in the same roles as post MBA. Eg. L6 PMs at Amazon and other similar post MBA roles. You can also take a job as a developer in the case that doesn't work out. It's also much cheaper than an MBA and usually 1.5 years. Important to go to a good school though. Downside is that its not got the same job security as a pure MBA or MS. But I think it meets your needs.

There aren't any doors that magically open for Masters or PhD and you'll end up behind top performers who only got a Bachelors. MBA is easy to get if you need one, and company will pay for it if you deserve it.

Consulting or finance(banking) or general mgmt do mba. For tech CS is better.
