I am SWE at Google. I want to do an MBA to improve over all skills. End goal: Become good manager Looking for some thoughts and opinions. TC: 250k
No need of an mba for that, get a good SDM who has the role you want now to mentor you
Only do it if you get into a top school.
MBAs are not for learning how to manage people/projects better. It's for strategic roles like Product Marketing, PMM, or Strategy Consulting. If you want to switch your career, get an MBA. If you want to be an EM, just become a lead on a project and ask your manager to help you eventually transition over in a year or two (companies love to promote SWEs to EMs)
Waste of money
You definitely need a bigger goal in life. Why on earth is becoming a good manager your end goal?
That's a first step. You might be right I didn't think beyond this 😂
Do MBA if you can. The mindset required for VP is to be more strategic. Even if you grow from SWE to VP, you’ll still be thinking tactical stuff and won’t be good at your job. Be proactive and keep sharing your ideas and thoughts without any fear of repercussions to grow fast. Good luck!
MBAs are for people that want to be top execs. Top schools are for top execs at mega corps. Stuff like accounting, capital markets, business strategy, marketing. If its interesting great but it isn't going to help you as a middle manager so is a waste of time.
