MBB ladder or return for partnership

Experienced hire new consultant at MBB. A few months in, previous employer (Big 4) mentioned via email that they are willing to make me assurance partner next year (I had left as a third year senior manager) if I choose to come back upon completing my first year. So 7 years at MBB (assuming not leaving for exit opps) vs. 1 year at Big 4 to partnership. Should I stay and explore the unknown, or go back to my comfort zone that I had exited? (Note: I had eleven years of experience at the Big 4 and took a step down in title to a consultant position.)

False carrot! Get it in writing before considering it

EY BlueCGolf OP Sep 23, 2021

Clarified - it was an email

Now get it written in your offer letter

What is the expected TC at Big4 partner level? If the TC is 50% more than what consulting position at MBB pays, the move is worth it.

Troll post. How I can tell it’s a troll? Because no individual can confirm you’ll be made partner at Big 4. The existing partners vote on who they let in to the partnership based on performance. 1 years worth of numbers isn’t enough unless you get lucky and pull in a contract with high double digit millions in revenue. Try harder, trolls.

I've heard of agreements like this but assurance makes shit money. Why would you leave MBB for that?

Bain & Company RKUn43 Sep 24, 2021

They better make you partner immediately - otherwise don't go back. They can't guarantee you the promotion, who know how the structures and decision makers change by then

EY BlueCGolf OP Sep 24, 2021

Promotions happen every June. I’m torn whether to return to audit for this or explore consulting.

HAHAHAHA! Someone who has been downgraded to a Consultant (barely entry level) at an MBB does not get to be a Partner. Not even at the lousy advisory lower end of Big 4 (I.e. EY and such). If this is a serious question - please get the offer in writing and leave MBB.

Do consulting. Much more impactful (at least on paper) and looks better. Better name for the resume too. Plus how would it look if you were at big4, jumped to mbb, then went back? It would just seem like you couldn't crack it at mbb and don't have what it takes so you went back to big4. Don't be so easily swayed by empty promises and stick to your decisions. You wanted mbb for a reason. What was that reason?

MBB >>> Big 4. I would take junior level role at MBB against mid-senior ones at Big 4 (and similarly mid-senior at MBB vs Partner at Big 4)

^this sounds like what someone who never worked in (real) consulting would say. There's plenty of B4 consulting teams that compete directly with MBB. I used to be on one of them and was usually underwhelmed when clients shared Mck work products (often as an example of what they DIDN'T want from us given how high level and non-actionable they were)

Btw, I have nothing against MBB...those firms are full of some incredibly smart people but it's ignorant to say that they're in a completely different league from all other firms and/or that they're always the better option.

OP, what is your TC? What do you do at MBB if you are in Assurance?

EY BlueCGolf OP Sep 29, 2021

Two hundred plus bonus plus RRSP contributions. Generalist consulting. Prior experience was in assurance / audit.

Alibaba Cloud Troyy Sep 30, 2021

As a partner, you'd immediately come out on top (accounting for first few years of payback). I'd pick Big4. Outside if the stupid branding/ego etc, there really isn't much of a difference between all the firms in 2021. If we were in 2000s, maybe yes. Strategy is cheap talk. Operational muscle matters. MBB is past it's glory. A partnership is worth something, it's weight in gold.

If you can guarantee partner why not go back. Did you like it at Big4 more then MBB? Also I assume partner will pay wayy more.
