I have a Top 5 MBA. Declined McKinsey engagement manager offer and stayed with FB and now trying to pursue PM within FB. Biggest thing was that I realized I only like consumer tech and don’t want to work on projects in fields I don’t care about and horrible WLB.
Which is the easiest path? 1. MBB to FANG PM 2. SaaS PM (above companies) to FANG PM 3. Google TAM to FANG PM Excluding Amazon.
2 above all for sure. PM lateral transfer into FAANG is way easier than breaking into PM. Notice most pm job postings require you to have product management experience
OP, going from TAM, PMM or Sales > PM is really hard at G. For context, most who try out fail because PM rotations at G are almost set up to fail people. Why? Rotations typically last 3-6 months which isn't enough for candidates to ship features or even write extensive PRDs. I've seen numerous people wash out and just a few make it because they rotated on a team where there things worked out timing wise, eg joined right before a product shipped and they owned a critical piece of the roadmap and they backfilled PMs on mat/pat leave etc.
Can anyone who voted MBB/G comment as to why? What specific high paying/good WLB exit opps can you target with MBB? It seems to me a lot of ex MBB target FANG PM with much difficulty.
Bump. Curious on these votes although I am going to accept PM tomorrow.
Class of 2019 here from M7, I can tell you that MBB is such a bad choice for folks who have the capability of going into Tech. 1. Overall 1st year TC is not that much higher even though you work 60+ hrs per week. My hours are more like 45 per week. Btw your offer is like the same as the ones handed out 2 years ago. 2. Tech has stonks that grow, many of which have over doubled in last year. This has made many tech offers actually pay much higher than MBB after 1st year vest. 3. Once you get PM experience, you can jump ship easily after 1 year. I did, and got a 40% TC bump during covid this year. Meanwhile, your sleep deprived MBB colleagues will be desperately trying to break into tech after 2 years of slavery and finding it hard to even get an interview. Hell when I become a GPM, I wouldn't hire MBB. Tldr. Please don't be a sheep
What do the offers for new Mba grads look like in Consulting vs Tech? Also mbb vs tech, which one is better for long term?
MBB = 230k TC like OP’s offer. Some also pay 50% of your MBA if you have a return offer. New grad MBA PM offers are probably at 200k-210k at public companies. Adobe and Amazon loves MBA PMs and I think pay that much. MBBs work 60 hour weeks though.
Nice offer on both PM and TAM! Looks like L4 offers but at the higher end
