(LATE POST) I interviewed at META for E4 few months ago. I solved all the coding questions with follow ups. Behavioral round was above average. BUT system design interview was not that good. I had a working design but I couldn't manage my time to discuss the scale part in depth. The interviewer was extremely RUDE since the beginning & was not in any mood at all. I got really negative vibes. Overall I had a positive feeling since I solved all the coding questions with follow ups. The interviewers seemed pretty satisfied with the code. So my question to META folks, Do they expect a perfect score in all the rounds? Can they reject just based on system design. Could there be any other reason? Am I missing something??
How long ago? We’re in a hiring freeze. I’m an interviewer, we were in discussions for a candidate on whether to send an offer or not and freeze came up, everything got cancelled. Nothing personal.
This was 3 months ago so may be not bcz the freeze.
Freeze hit in April, 3 months ago.
Do you mind sharing your preparation strategy?? Thanks
Leetcode Easy 100+ Medium 300 Hard 80 System design from multiple online resources. Did 5 paid mock coding interviews
Strategy for what? Op couldn’t crack it so even op doesn’t know the strategy
You probably didn’t mess anything up horribly but someone else did better than you and they picked someone else. It’s all about competition these days.
Yep that could be one f the possibility
This is not true. You didn't do as well as you thought.
Did you have two questions for coding round, solving follow up doesn’t mean anything unless u do 2 separate problems
Yea I solved 2 separate questions. For example 1st was an array question and 2nd was a tree question. I was able to solve both with in 30-35 mins since I had solved them already on leetcode. That was the case in all coding rounds.
People mistakenly believe that coding is about writing memorized working code.
Hmm I didn't memorize though. But still I don't think I did well enough as I thought I did. Lesson learned.

L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
The bar for level 4 for systems design is not high. If you only failed the design, you would normally get a follow up round. Since you didn't, your performance at some other rounds wasn't good, either mixed or just bad. Your best chance to find out is ask your recruiter. They might share.
Thanks. Recruiter did not share any feedback. I tried that.
In that case, it's not possible to find out what happened. One thing I noticed by interviewing a lot - sometimes results are not what you expect. I was in situation when solved all problems and got rejected due to slow coding speed and quality of code and once I received Hire where I coded only 1.25 out of 2 problems. Interviewer told me that he was looking at analytical thinking skills mostly and some ability to code.
