Would your answer change for career in DS?
CS for sure.
Cs
I have an PhD in stats. Go for the MS in CS. If you can, take the first two graduate-level theoretical statistics courses (it is basically calculus in a statistical context) and a course in Design of Experiments (DoE; AB testing is a subset of DoE).
As everyone has said, CS but if you want to pursue statistics then please learn object oriented coding and you will still be extremely valuable.
You are 100% correct. I’m a stats PhD and the level of programming expertise in stats departments is horrendous. I wrote some basic OOP-based code for a research project (funded by a grant) and asked for feedback from the Principal Investigator (PI). My PI’s response was 95% “ummm” and “ahhh”. Our collaborator was a Physicist with a good background in CS. His feedback was quite constructive.
Laughing because my first intro to "programming" was R in my upper level stats class. God it was frustrating.
Neither. Find a alternate career. Tech is not long term
Nah we will survive. Don't worry. This cycle repeats every 10 years it's just that the supply definitely has gone up as compare to 2010 so that's gonna definitely create some competition. All in all this is still good. You got this!
Pro: MS in Stats if you want to build a model correctly. You will test and control for dozens of things 99% of modelers have no clue exists. You will be way more accurate, use way less data, and be able to scale faster. Con: Most people will have no clue what you are talking about and not realize that Classical Stats is vastly more powerful than Modern ML in the vast majority of applications, also you can use your Classical Stats knowledge to vastly improve Modern ML models in ways 99% of modelers can’t. You will be in lots of interviews with tryhards who have no clue what they are talking about, eventually you will land a spot with actual Statisticians with actual standards.
100% this.
My wife did both. MSCS and PhD Stats
Thank you all for these great responses
