I have an admit for Ms in CS from Stony Brook University. I am an average programmer and want to pursue masters to polish my coding skills. Should I go for masters? TC: 18 lakhs Yoe: 1
I am also in the same queue dude
A Master's won't teach you a whole lot. It's more of a gateway to the US job market. Take the education part out of the equation when you make this decision.
Work for a year in India. There are a lot of students who directly do their masters after undergrad. People with experience stand out from the crowd when it comes to finding internships and FT roles. It’s honestly very valuable experience. You can also ask Stony to defer your admit to next year.
What if I get into Amazon in the next 1 year?
Well that’s up to you. My response above is with an assumption that you want to move to the US. And having experience helps with getting a job here. If you want to get a Masters to become a better coder, honestly, nothing teaches to code like a pro like a professional job would. Go swim in the deep end buddy.
Hey, I did my Masters in US, my background is hardware. 18 lakhs is a very good package in India. If you are able to get transferred to US then I would skip Masters. If your plan is to get a job in the US with a higher pay, then do Masters. If your plan is to come back to India after your Masters I would think twice since a Masters program would be expensive. At least 40 to 50 percent of candidates for a role have Masters now.
My only hope of getting transferred to USA is Amazon but then l1b is the problem. I don't have any plans of coming to India after completing my masters.
What is the total cost of this program in $$?? And how long is it?
Unless it's a world famous school, the US degree probably won't add value for job search in India. I know too many people who went back home and their foreign degree was not worth the investment. You spend in dollars and earn in rupees, the ROI is going to be shit.
Why not stay in India if you get good salary ? I see people getting 80-90 lpa with 8-10yrs of experience
I want to experience lifestyle in USA and I am not thinking about settling permanently there.
Same story like each one of us. Working in the US is a hype. Welcoming you to the rat race here 😊
Go for masters only if you are doing a specialization course like robotics, ML, CV, AI etc. Masters is not to polish coding skill ffs. If you just want to enter the US job market, do a cheaper masters program. If you think that a foreign masters will fetch you $$$ when you get back to India, you are wrong, unless you are from top 5-7 masters program.
+1
